What the SMMX format is

SMMX is the native mind-map format used by SimpleMind on desktop and mobile platforms. It stores the map's editable structure, including topics, branches, text, relationships, colors, icons, notes, and layout information.

You usually encounter SMMX files after saving a map in SimpleMind or receiving an editable map from another SimpleMind user. SMMX is intended for continued editing in SimpleMind, not for direct viewing in general image or office software.

What the PNG format is

PNG is a raster image format supported by web browsers, office applications, presentation software, image viewers, and most operating systems. It is suitable for diagrams because it preserves sharp text and lines without JPEG-style compression artifacts.

A PNG is useful when the recipient only needs to view or place the mind map, not edit its branches. It can retain transparency when the exporting application provides that option, but it does not retain SMMX's editable topics, links, notes, or layout objects.

How to convert SMMX to PNG

Using SimpleMind

1. Open the .smmx file in SimpleMind.
2. Check the map at its intended zoom level and adjust the canvas, topic spacing, font sizes, and orientation if necessary.
3. Choose File → Export and select Image, PNG, or the equivalent image-export command. The exact label varies between SimpleMind editions.
4. Choose the complete map or the selected area, set the background and image resolution if those options are available, and export the result as map.png.

On mobile editions, open the map's share or export command, choose an image export, select PNG when a format choice is shown, and save or share the generated file.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

PNG conversion renders the map as one bitmap. It cannot preserve editability, clickable links, collapsed branches, speaker notes, or other interactive SimpleMind data; keep the original SMMX file alongside the PNG.

Large maps can produce an image with very small text if exported at screen resolution. Use the highest available export resolution or enlarge the map before exporting, then inspect the PNG at 100% zoom. For printing, choose a high-resolution or print-sized export when SimpleMind offers one.

Fonts missing from the conversion environment may be substituted, and very wide maps may be reduced to fit a page or image boundary. Verify that every branch is visible after conversion, particularly if the source map uses a cropped selection, transparent background, or nonstandard fonts.
