What the SMMX format is

SMMX is the native project format of SimpleMind, a mind-mapping application for desktop and mobile platforms. It stores the map hierarchy, topics, links, notes, relationships, styling, and other map data in an editable form. You typically encounter it when a SimpleMind user sends a source map instead of an exported PDF or image.

What the MMAP format is

MMAP is the native file format associated with MindManager. It is designed for editable mind maps and flowcharts containing branches, boundaries, relationships, notes, hyperlinks, task information, attachments, and formatting. An MMAP file is preferable to a static image when the recipient needs to reorganize or continue editing the map in MindManager.

How to convert SMMX to MMAP

Use the built-in online converter

1. Open the SMMX-to-MMAP converter on 101convert.com.
2. Choose or drag the .smmx file into the upload area.
3. Select MMAP as the output format if the format is not selected automatically.
4. Start the conversion and download the resulting .mmap file when processing finishes.
5. Open the output in MindManager and check the hierarchy, notes, links, relationships, and attachments before distributing it.

This route does not require SimpleMind or MindManager to be installed. Do not change the filename extension manually; renaming map.smmx to map.mmap does not convert the internal file structure.

Use an interchange format when direct conversion is unavailable

1. Open the map in SimpleMind.
2. Export it through File → Export using OPML or FreeMind, if that version of SimpleMind provides either option.
3. In MindManager, use File → Open or File → Import and select the exported interchange file.
4. Review the imported map, then use File → Save As and select the MMAP format.

Menu names and available export formats vary between SimpleMind editions and operating systems. If OPML or FreeMind export is missing, the online converter is the more direct option.

Quality and compatibility limits

The two applications do not expose exactly the same feature set, so conversion can change theme styling, boundary shapes, relationship arrows, task metadata, icons, embedded files, or application-specific properties. Basic topics and parent-child structure generally provide the most reliable transfer; inspect complex maps in MindManager and restore any missing formatting there.

Keep the original SMMX file as the source copy. If the map contains external images or linked documents, verify that those resources were embedded or copy them separately, because a conversion may preserve a link without copying the referenced file.
