What the SMMX format is

.smmx is the native project format used by SimpleMind for mind maps. It stores the map hierarchy, topics, relationships, notes, links, images, icons, boundaries, layout data, and styling used by the application. You encounter SMMX files when a map is saved from SimpleMind on desktop or mobile and when a SimpleMind project is shared as an editable file.

What the XMIND format is

.xmind is the native workbook format used by XMind. It is intended for editable mind maps containing topics, notes, labels, markers, relationships, summaries, boundaries, attachments, and presentation layouts. XMind is a better target when the recipient works in XMind, needs XMind-specific editing tools, or wants to keep several sheets in one workbook.

How to actually convert SMMX to XMIND

Use the built-in online converter

1. Open the SMMX-to-XMIND conversion page on 101convert.com.
2. Choose the .smmx file from SimpleMind.
3. Start the conversion and wait for the generated .xmind file.
4. Download the result and open it in XMind. If XMind reports unsupported content, compare the imported map with the original before deleting the SMMX source.

This option requires no locally installed conversion software and is suitable when the map contains ordinary topics, notes, and basic relationships.

Use SimpleMind and XMind as desktop applications

1. Open the SMMX file in SimpleMind.
2. Choose File → Export and select FreeMind or another mind-map XML export supported by both applications. Save the result as .mm.
3. Open XMind and choose File → Import → FreeMind or the corresponding FreeMind import command in your XMind version.
4. Select the exported .mm file, review the map, and save it as .xmind with File → Save As.

Menu names vary between SimpleMind and XMind releases. If SimpleMind does not offer FreeMind export in the installed edition, use the built-in converter instead; renaming .smmx to .xmind does not convert the file.

Quality and compatibility limits

The FreeMind interchange route normally preserves the topic tree and basic text, but proprietary SimpleMind styling, custom layouts, some relationship types, attachments, embedded images, icons, task data, and application-specific metadata may be changed or omitted. XMind may also place imported content into a different sheet structure or apply its own default theme.

Keep the original SMMX file as the editable source until the XMIND result has been checked. Verify collapsed branches, hyperlinks, notes, images, labels, boundaries, and cross-links in XMind, especially when the map contains non-ASCII text or multiple attachments.
