People convert SMMX files when a mind map must be edited in Microsoft Word, attached to a DOCX-based workflow, or archived in a broadly supported office format. The conversion is most useful for producing a structured outline; Word cannot preserve every visual relationship from the original mind-map canvas.

What the SMMX format is

SMMX is the native mind-map format used by SimpleMind. It stores a map's topics, parent-child hierarchy, notes, links, icons, formatting, and other map metadata in a form intended for reopening and editing in SimpleMind on supported desktop and mobile platforms.

You usually encounter .smmx files after creating a map in SimpleMind or receiving one from another SimpleMind user. SMMX is not a general-purpose document format, so Microsoft Word and most office suites do not open it directly as an editable document.

What the DOCX format is

DOCX is the default Office Open XML document format used by Microsoft Word and supported by LibreOffice Writer and other word processors. It is suitable for editable reports, outlines, meeting notes, assignments, and documents that require comments, tracked changes, printing, or office-system compatibility.

A DOCX conversion normally represents the map as headings, numbered or bulleted lists, paragraphs, and sometimes images. It is better for linear reading and editing than for preserving a radial mind-map layout.

How to convert SMMX to DOCX

Using the built-in online converter

1. Open the SMMX-to-DOCX conversion page on 101convert.com.
2. Upload the source file, such as project.smmx.
3. Select DOCX as the output format and start the conversion.
4. Download the generated Word document and open it in Microsoft Word or LibreOffice Writer.
5. Check heading levels, list indentation, notes, hyperlinks, and any embedded images before distributing the file.

This route requires no installed conversion software. Do not rename .smmx to .docx; changing the filename extension does not change the internal format.

Using SimpleMind and a desktop word processor

1. Open the map in the version of SimpleMind that created or supports .smmx.
2. Use File → Export or the equivalent export command and choose the most structured available option, such as an outline, HTML, or RTF export. Avoid an image-only export when the Word document must remain editable.
3. Open the exported file in Microsoft Word or LibreOffice Writer. For HTML or RTF, use File → Open.
4. Save the result with File → Save as and select Word 2007–365 (*.docx) or DOCX.
5. Reapply heading styles and repair list nesting if the intermediate export does not carry those styles correctly.

Quality and compatibility limits

The conversion can preserve the topic hierarchy while changing the visual design. Branch positions, curved connectors, canvas spacing, colors, icons, summaries, boundaries, and map-level styling may be flattened, omitted, or represented as ordinary text. Notes and hyperlinks may require manual checking.

For a faithful visual record, export the map separately as PDF or an image and include that file alongside the editable DOCX. For a usable Word outline, keep the map hierarchy shallow and verify that major topics became headings rather than plain paragraphs. A newer SimpleMind feature may not be represented by an older exporter or by a generic converter.
