What the SMMX format is

.smmx is the native mind-map file format used by SimpleMind. It stores a map's topics, branches, relationships, notes, links, images, styling, and layout information so the map can be reopened and edited in SimpleMind. You may encounter SMMX files exported or saved by SimpleMind on Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android.

SMMX is an editable authoring format, not a general-purpose document format. Renaming map.smmx to map.pdf does not convert the file.

What the PDF format is

PDF is a fixed-layout document format intended for consistent viewing, printing, and distribution. It can be opened on most computers and mobile devices without SimpleMind, and it preserves page dimensions, fonts, colors, shapes, and positioning more reliably than an image export.

A PDF normally represents the map as a finished document rather than an editable mind map. Keep the original .smmx file if you need to change topics, rearrange branches, or update the design later.

How to actually convert SMMX to PDF

Using SimpleMind

1. Open the .smmx file in SimpleMind.
2. Check the map at its full extent and remove or collapse content that should not appear in the final document.
3. On desktop, choose File → Export → PDF, or use the equivalent Export command in your SimpleMind version.
4. Choose the output filename, paper size, orientation, and scaling options when offered, then save the PDF.
5. Open the resulting PDF and check branch labels, page breaks, images, and links before sharing or printing it.

On iOS or Android, open the map and use the app's Share or Export command, then select PDF if that option is available. The exact command name depends on the SimpleMind edition and version.

Using the built-in online converter

You can convert the file for free on 101convert.com without installing software: upload the SMMX file, select PDF as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting PDF. Use the original file's .smmx extension, and do not upload a map containing confidential information unless the service's handling and deletion terms are acceptable.

Quality and compatibility considerations

Very large maps may be scaled down until text becomes difficult to read or may be divided across pages. Select a larger paper size, landscape orientation, or a multi-page layout when available. Inspect the PDF at 100% zoom rather than judging it only from a thumbnail.

PDF output is a visual representation: branch structure usually remains visible, but topics are not automatically converted into independently editable PDF objects. Interactive links, embedded images, notes, and unsupported fonts may be omitted or behave differently depending on the SimpleMind version or converter.
