A PDF is useful when a mind map must be sent to someone without MindManager, attached to a report, printed, or stored as a fixed record. Conversion preserves the map's visible arrangement for review, but it does not create an editable replacement for the original file.

What the MMAP format is

.mmap is the native document format associated with MindManager, formerly marketed as Mindjet MindManager. It stores the map's structured content, including topics, branches, relationships, notes, hyperlinks, icons, images, attachments, task data, formatting, and layout. Project teams, consultants, educators, planners, and meeting facilitators use MMAP files for brainstorming, project plans, process maps, and other hierarchical diagrams.

What the PDF format is

PDF is a page-oriented document format designed to preserve appearance across operating systems, viewers, and printers. A PDF export can retain selectable text, positioning, colors, connectors, images, page size, and sometimes clickable hyperlinks. It normally does not retain editable branches, relationships, task fields, notes, attachments, collapsed-branch behavior, or the full map model; those remain in the original .mmap file.

How to convert an MMAP file with MindManager

1. Open the file, such as project-plan.mmap, in a MindManager desktop edition that supports its file version. If the file will not open, try a compatible or newer MindManager release rather than renaming the extension.
2. Prepare the visible map. Expand or collapse branches as required, hide material that should not be distributed, check images and fonts, and remove temporary selection markers or annotations. The visible state and export settings can affect the PDF.
3. Use File → Export → PDF. Menu names differ between MindManager releases and Windows and macOS editions; some versions expose PDF output through File → Print instead.
4. Set the paper size, orientation, margins, scale, and page range in the export or print dialog. Landscape orientation and a larger paper size usually suit wide maps. Use multiple pages or export only the required branches instead of reducing a large map to unreadable text on one page.
5. Save the result as project-plan.pdf, open it in a PDF viewer, and inspect every page at normal viewing size. Check branch labels, connectors, page breaks, images, text clipping, and hyperlinks.

Direct export from MindManager is normally the best choice because it can use the application's map-rendering and PDF options. Direct export and hyperlink support vary by product version, so verify the output rather than assuming every map feature was included.

Print-to-PDF captures the printable view rather than necessarily using MindManager's dedicated PDF exporter. It can change pagination and may lose hyperlinks, notes, attachments, metadata, or other interactive content. Review the resulting pages before distributing them.

Quality and compatibility limits

Mind maps use a flexible spatial canvas, while PDF uses fixed pages. Large or wide maps can therefore produce tiny text, unexpected page breaks, clipped content, or a very high page count. Adjust the map layout, select a larger paper size, use landscape orientation, or split the export across pages. A PDF preserves only the chosen view; hidden or collapsed branches may not appear.

Selectable text and links may survive a direct export, but support for hyperlinks, notes, attachments, embedded objects, task information, and comments depends on the MindManager version and export method. Attachments are not normally embedded as editable source files in the PDF. Keep the original .mmap beside the PDF when future editing, searching of map metadata, or recovery of attachments is required.
