Convert MMAP to PDF

Recipients may need a MindManager map in a format they can open without MindManager, print, submit, or archive as a fixed record. PDF preserves the exported appearance, but it does not preserve the editable mind-map structure.

What the MMAP format is

.mmap is the native document format used by MindManager, formerly called Mindjet MindManager. It stores topics, relationships, boundaries, notes, hyperlinks, attachments, task data, formatting, and map layout. Common users include project teams, planners, consultants, educators, and anyone creating brainstorming, meeting, process, or project maps.

What the PDF format is

PDF is a page-oriented format intended for consistent viewing, printing, and sharing across operating systems. A PDF can preserve the map's visible text, colors, connectors, images, and page arrangement, and direct exports may retain clickable hyperlinks. It is not a replacement for the original .mmap file: branches, relationships, task fields, notes, and layout remain editable only in a compatible mind-mapping application.

How to convert an MMAP file with MindManager

1. Open the file, such as project-plan.mmap, in a desktop version of MindManager that supports its file version. Update MindManager if an older release cannot open the map.
2. Prepare the map before exporting. Expand the branches that must appear, remove or hide material that should not be included, and check whether notes, attachments, hyperlinks, and other elements are covered by the selected export options.
3. Choose File → Export → PDF. The exact menu label varies between MindManager releases and Windows or macOS editions.
4. Set the paper size, orientation, margins, scale, and page range in the export dialog. Landscape orientation and a larger paper size usually work better for wide maps. Avoid fitting a large map onto one page if the resulting text is unreadable.
5. Choose a destination and save the result as project-plan.pdf. Open the PDF and inspect every page, including text size, clipped branches, page breaks, images, and links.

If PDF export is unavailable, choose File → Print and select Microsoft Print to PDF on Windows or the system Save as PDF option on macOS. Print-to-PDF can produce different pagination and may lose hyperlinks or other interactive features, so verify the output rather than assuming it matches a direct export.

Using an online converter

Services such as Zamzar and CloudConvert may list .mmap to PDF conversion, but support depends on the provider's current file-recognition and conversion engine. Confirm that .mmap is accepted before uploading, use a copy of the source, and download and inspect the generated PDF.

Do not upload maps containing confidential business, customer, personal, or contractual information unless the service's retention, processing, and deletion terms meet your requirements. Online converters cannot restore editable map structure and may omit unsupported MindManager features. If the upload fails or the layout is incomplete, export directly from MindManager.

Quality and compatibility limits

PDF output is page-based, while a mind map is arranged on an open spatial canvas. Large maps can therefore produce tiny text, unexpected page breaks, or many pages. Adjust the map layout and export settings, then review the PDF at 100% scale and in the application used by the recipient.

Direct PDF export may retain selectable text and hyperlinks, but support for hyperlinks, notes, attachments, comments, task information, and embedded objects varies by MindManager version and export method. Attachments are not normally carried into the PDF as editable source files. Keep the original .mmap alongside the PDF for future changes.

Applications such as XMind, MindMaple, and MindGenius should not be treated as guaranteed MMAP converters. Use one only when its current version explicitly supports importing the particular MindManager file; otherwise, open the map in MindManager and export it there.
