A conversion is needed when a MindManager user must share a map with someone working in XMind or when the recipient specifically requires an .xmind workbook. The usual method is to import the .mmap file in XMind desktop and save the imported map in XMind format.
What the MMAP format is
.mmap is MindManager’s native, proprietary map format. MindManager users use it for mind maps, project plans, meeting notes, workflows, and structured information. Depending on the source map, an MMAP file can contain topics, notes, hyperlinks, images, relationships, boundaries, task data, attachments, and custom formatting.
What the XMIND format is
.xmind is XMind’s native workbook format. An XMind workbook can contain one or more sheets and supports topics, notes, labels, markers, hyperlinks, boundaries, relationships, summaries, images, task information, and presentation layouts. Saving in this format lets XMind users continue editing the map without MindManager.
Convert with XMind desktop
- Install a current desktop release of XMind from the official XMind website. Use the desktop application rather than XMind’s mobile or web applications for this import.
- Open XMind and choose File → Import.
- Select MindManager, MindManager file, or the equivalent import option provided by that release.
- Select the source file, for example
project-plan.mmap. - Review the imported map, especially notes, hyperlinks, images, task fields, boundaries, relationships, and attachments.
- Choose File → Save As or the release’s save-copy command, and save the result as
project-plan.xmind.
Import support varies by XMind release and operating system. If MindManager is not listed under File → Import, update XMind and check that release’s supported import formats. Do not simply rename .mmap to .xmind; the two files use different structures.
Use MindManager and OPML as a fallback
If the installed XMind version cannot open a particular MMAP file, open the file in a compatible version of MindManager and export it to .opml if both applications support that option. In XMind, choose File → Import, select the OPML file, and save the resulting map as .xmind.
OPML is an outline interchange format, not a complete mind-map format. This route usually preserves the topic hierarchy and may preserve some text or hyperlink data, but it can remove MindManager-specific styling, floating topics, relationship lines, boundaries, attachments, embedded objects, task metadata, and other map features.
Check compatibility after conversion
Direct import generally retains more structure than OPML, but it does not guarantee feature-for-feature reproduction. Compare the converted workbook with the original and inspect custom themes, floating topics, callouts, summaries, relationship lines, images, notes, hyperlinks, task properties, and attachments.
Links to external files may still reference paths on the original computer rather than files embedded in the XMind workbook. Copy required attachments separately, test important hyperlinks, and keep the original .mmap file because conversion to .xmind is not reversible.
Generic online conversion services are not a dependable option for this format pair: many do not support proprietary MMAP parsing or XMind export, and uploading a map can expose confidential notes, attachments, or project data. Use an online service only if it explicitly lists both MMAP input and XMIND output, states how files are handled, and is acceptable for the data involved; for private or complex maps, use XMind desktop with MindManager as the fallback.
