Free online MMAP to XLS converter

MindManager uses MMAP for visual maps, while older Excel installations and some business systems require the XLS workbook format. Converting the map makes its topics and selected properties available as spreadsheet rows for editing, filtering, reporting, or sharing.

What the MMAP format is

MMAP is the native mind-map file format associated with MindManager. It stores a central topic and branches, along with map structure and, depending on the file and software version, notes, hyperlinks, markers, task data, relationships, boundaries, attachments, and formatting. MMAP preserves a visual hierarchy rather than a table.

MindManager users exchange MMAP files for project planning, brainstorming, meeting records, and task organization. A compatible MindManager version is the most reliable way to interpret the map's full structure and properties.

What the XLS format is

XLS is Microsoft's older binary Excel workbook format, used natively through Excel 2003. It stores worksheets containing rows, columns, values, formulas, formatting, and some charts and workbook objects. XLS is still required by some legacy Excel installations, import routines, and business applications; modern workflows generally prefer XLSX.

An MMAP-to-XLS export normally produces a tabular outline. Topics become rows, while indentation, outline levels, or separate columns indicate hierarchy. The workbook cannot reproduce the map canvas, branch geometry, relationship lines, floating-topic layout, or every MindManager-specific property.

How to convert MMAP to XLS

Using MindManager and a spreadsheet editor

1. Make a copy of the .mmap file and open the copy in MindManager.
2. Expand or inspect branches that must be included. Check the export options for notes, hyperlinks, markers, task fields, custom properties, and other fields that should become spreadsheet columns.
3. Use the Excel export command, commonly File → Export → Excel or File → Export → Spreadsheet → Microsoft Excel Workbook. Menu names vary by MindManager version.
4. If MindManager offers a choice, save directly as .xls. If it exports only .xlsx, save that workbook first.
5. For an XLSX intermediate file, open it in Microsoft Excel or LibreOffice Calc. Choose File → Save As, select Excel 97–2003 (*.xls), save, and confirm the legacy-format warning.
6. Reopen the resulting .xls file and check row order, outline levels, worksheet names, dates, numeric values, special characters, hyperlinks, and omitted fields.

MindManager is the preferred desktop tool because it understands the source map. Excel or LibreOffice is needed when the export produces XLSX and the recipient specifically requires XLS.

Quality and compatibility limits

• The result is a structural export, not a visual copy. Deep branches may appear as indented rows or level columns, and notes, markers, custom properties, or task fields may be omitted or placed in separate columns.
• Attachments generally do not become usable embedded spreadsheet content. Relationship lines, boundaries, floating topics, and map positioning are not represented as XLS layout.
• An XLS worksheet supports a maximum of 65,536 rows and 256 columns. A large map can exceed these limits or require multiple worksheets.
• Saving through an older XLS format can alter formulas, formatting, hyperlinks, dates, and unsupported modern workbook features. If the recipient accepts XLSX, retain the .xlsx export instead.
• Export behavior differs between MindManager releases. Inspect the workbook after conversion and keep the original MMAP file unchanged for later editing.
