What the MMAP format is

.mmap is the native, proprietary map format used by MindManager, originally developed under the Mindjet name. It can store a central topic, branches, subtopics, relationships, notes, hyperlinks, task properties, icons, boundaries, and attachments. MMAP files are used for brainstorming maps, project plans, meeting structures, process maps, and knowledge outlines.

Microsoft Excel and LibreOffice Calc do not normally open an MMAP file as a mind map. The format must be exported by MindManager or processed by a converter that understands its structure.

What the XLSX format is

.xlsx is the XML-based workbook format used by Microsoft Excel and supported by LibreOffice Calc, Apple Numbers, Google Sheets import, and many data-processing applications. An XLSX workbook contains worksheets with cells, rows, columns, formulas, tables, filters, and formatting.

XLSX is suitable for sorting, filtering, reporting, checklist editing, and importing map content into another business system. It does not preserve the original radial or free-positioned map layout as a spreadsheet diagram.

How to convert MMAP to XLSX in MindManager

1. Open the .mmap file in MindManager. If the map was saved by a newer release, update MindManager or have the sender save it in a compatible version.
2. Review the map and remove temporary branches. Confirm that the notes, task fields, hyperlinks, and other properties contain the information required in the workbook.
3. Choose File → Export → Excel. Depending on the MindManager release, the command may be labelled File → Export → Microsoft Excel.
4. In the export dialog, select the available topic and worksheet layout options. Enable hierarchy, notes, hyperlinks, task information, or custom fields when those fields are offered.
5. Choose .xlsx as the output format, select a destination, and save the workbook.
6. Open the result in Excel or LibreOffice Calc. Check topic levels, column headings, dates, task values, hyperlinks, and several branches before sharing it.

Quality and compatibility limits

• Topic depth is usually represented by indentation, hierarchy columns, or separate fields; the exporter cannot reproduce the map’s spatial layout in ordinary worksheet cells.
• Topic text and structured properties generally transfer more reliably than visual features. Themes, connector geometry, boundaries, icons, map markers, floating topics, and complex relationship lines may be omitted or simplified.
• Notes, hyperlinks, task data, and custom properties transfer only when the selected exporter or converter supports them. Attachments may become links or be excluded instead of being embedded in the workbook.
• MindManager releases can provide different Excel export fields and menu names. If required data is missing, export an outline or copy the missing fields separately; opening the workbook in another spreadsheet application will not reconstruct omitted map data.
• Check dates, percentages, formulas, multiline notes, Unicode characters, merged cells, and hyperlinks after conversion. Spreadsheet software can interpret task dates or text resembling numbers differently from MindManager.
