What the MMAP format is

.mmap is the native map-file format used by Mindjet MindManager, now branded MindManager. It stores editable mind maps and flowcharts, including topics, branches, relationships, boundaries, hyperlinks, notes, attachments, icons, task data, and formatting.

MindManager users create MMAP files for brainstorming, project planning, meeting summaries, process diagrams, and organizational charts. A standard image viewer cannot normally open an MMAP file because it is a structured document rather than a raster image.

What the JPEG format is

JPEG, using the .jpg or .jpeg extension, is a raster image format supported by browsers, office applications, phones, and image viewers. Its lossy compression usually produces smaller files than uncompressed or lossless image formats, making a rendered map easier to share and embed.

JPEG stores only the map's visible appearance. It does not preserve editable topics, branches, hyperlinks, comments, notes, attachments, task metadata, or map history. Lossy compression can blur small text and thin connector lines, especially at low quality. JPEG also does not preserve transparency; transparent areas must be rendered against a background.

How to convert an MMAP file to JPEG

Export with MindManager

1. Open the .mmap file in a compatible or current version of MindManager. A release older than the one that created the file may not open it correctly.
2. Adjust the map before exporting. Expand required branches, hide unnecessary content, and set the view or page area so labels and connectors are visible.
3. Choose File → Export → Image. Depending on the MindManager release, the command may be named File → Export → Image File.
4. Select JPEG or .jpg, choose the destination and filename, and confirm the export.
5. Choose the largest practical dimensions and a high-quality setting. If the dialog offers current view and entire map, use the entire map for a complete diagram or current view for a focused section.
6. Open the exported JPEG and check text, branches, page boundaries, and image quality at the intended display or print size.

Some MindManager versions or export configurations may not offer JPEG directly. In that case, export to PNG first, then use an installed image editor to save the PNG as JPEG. PNG is a better intermediate format for small text and thin lines because it does not add lossy compression before the final conversion.

Quality and compatibility limits

A large map rendered as one fixed-size JPEG can become unreadable when reduced to a page or email preview. Increase the output dimensions, export separate map sections, or use a lossless image format when sharp text and connectors matter more than JPEG compatibility.

Collapsed branches, hidden objects, off-canvas content, speaker notes, hyperlinks, and attachments are not recoverable from the JPEG unless they were visibly rendered in the exported area. Keep the original .mmap file whenever future editing or complete map preservation is required.
