How to convert mm to xlsx file

A mind map is converted to XLSX when its topics need to be reviewed as rows, filtered in a spreadsheet, or imported into reporting and planning software. XLSX is also easier to edit and share with users who do not have mind-mapping software.

What the MM format is

.mm is the XML-based mind-map format used by FreeMind and supported by related applications such as Freeplane. It stores a root topic and nested nodes, along with data such as labels, notes, hyperlinks, icons, formatting, and map metadata.

An MM file represents a hierarchy rather than a table. Its branches, visual layout, boundaries, connectors, and some application-specific properties do not have direct equivalents in a spreadsheet.

What the XLSX format is

.xlsx is the Office Open XML workbook format used by Microsoft Excel, LibreOffice Calc, Google Sheets import, and many reporting systems. It stores worksheets, rows, columns, cell values, formulas, formatting, filters, and charts in a ZIP-based XML package.

For a mind map, conversion commonly produces one row per node with columns such as topic, parent topic, depth, full path, notes, hyperlink, or node type. This structure supports sorting, filtering, calculations, and further data processing, but it does not reproduce the original radial map.

Convert an MM file online

On 101convert.com, the built-in converter can process the file without installing desktop software:

  1. Open the MM-to-XLSX conversion page.
  2. Upload the .mm file or choose it with the file picker.
  3. Select XLSX as the output format and start the conversion.
  4. Download the generated workbook and open it in Excel or another compatible spreadsheet application.

Check the resulting worksheet before sharing it. Confirm that every branch is present, inspect long notes and hyperlinks, and verify that text containing commas, line breaks, quotation marks, or non-Latin characters was placed in the intended cells.

Convert with desktop software

If the MM application provides a tabular or CSV export, use it as an intermediate format:

  1. Open the map in Freeplane or another application that supports the MM format.
  2. Use the program's export command for CSV or another spreadsheet-compatible table format. The exact command and available columns depend on the application and version.
  3. Open the exported CSV in Excel or LibreOffice Calc, select the correct character encoding and delimiter if prompted, then save it as .xlsx using File → Save As.

Do not rename .mm to .xlsx, and do not expect Excel to interpret the MM XML directly as a workbook. If the map software has no suitable export, an MM-aware converter or a custom XML-to-XLSX script is required.

Quality and compatibility limits

  • Hierarchy mapping: A converter may place the branch depth in a separate column, indent topic text, or use parent and path columns. Review the chosen representation before using the workbook for automation.
  • Formatting: Font styles, icons, colors, folding state, boundaries, connectors, and the two-dimensional map layout may be discarded or reduced to cell formatting.
  • Notes and links: Notes can become a separate cell, plain text, or be omitted. Hyperlinks may remain active only if the converter maps them to spreadsheet hyperlinks.
  • Rich text and embedded content: HTML-formatted notes, images, attachments, formulas, and application-specific extensions may not survive conversion.
  • Large maps: A deep or heavily annotated map can create very long rows or many columns. Excel worksheet limits and the converter's own limits still apply.
  • Validation: Compare the number of source nodes with the number of output rows, inspect several deep branches, and open the saved workbook in the target spreadsheet application.
