Mind maps saved as .mm files are often sent to people who do not have FreeMind or Freeplane installed, or submitted to systems that accept only standard documents. A PDF preserves a viewable, printable snapshot while keeping the original map file unchanged.

What the MM format is

An .mm file is usually a FreeMind mind map. It is an XML-based format that stores a central topic, child nodes, formatting, icons, links, notes, and other map data; FreeMind uses it natively, and Freeplane can open, edit, and save compatible .mm maps.

The format stores a hierarchy rather than fixed pages. The displayed result can vary with the application, available fonts, map theme, expanded or collapsed branches, and page settings. The .mm extension is not exclusive to mind maps, so confirm that the file opens in FreeMind or Freeplane before converting it.

What the PDF format is

PDF, short for Portable Document Format, is a fixed-layout document format used for consistent viewing and printing across operating systems and PDF viewers. A PDF can contain selectable text, vector branch lines, images, colors, page dimensions, and hyperlinks, but the result depends on the software and export method.

PDF does not retain an editable mind-map structure. Recipients cannot expand branches, rearrange nodes, or edit map metadata as they can in an .mm file, so keep the original file for future changes. For formal long-term preservation requirements, use PDF/A only if the exporting tool explicitly offers it.

Convert an MM file to PDF

To convert without installing software, upload the .mm file to the free converter on 101convert.com, choose PDF as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting .pdf file. Open the PDF after conversion and check that all required branches, text, and images are present.

For control over the layout, export from Freeplane:

1. Open the .mm file in Freeplane.
2. Expand every branch that must appear in the PDF; folded child nodes are generally not included in the visible map output.
3. Adjust node fonts, map layout, page size, orientation, margins, and scaling as needed.
4. Select File → Export map → As PDF.
5. Save the file and inspect each page in a PDF viewer at normal reading size.

If direct PDF export is unavailable in the application being used, select File → Print and choose the operating system’s PDF printer or Save as PDF. Print-to-PDF can produce different pagination or lower-quality graphics than a dedicated export, so inspect the result.

Quality and compatibility limits

Large radial maps rarely fit legibly on one page. Use landscape orientation, a larger paper size, reduced margins, or multiple pages; splitting a large map into separate topic maps is often clearer than shrinking it to fit.

Fonts missing on the conversion computer may be substituted, changing line wrapping, node width, and branch placement. Use common installed fonts when exact layout matters, and review the completed PDF on the intended device.

Clickable links may survive a native PDF export, but this is exporter- and viewer-dependent. Attachments, scripts, folded-node controls, and other interactive mind-map functions do not become functional PDF features. Some conversion paths rasterize the map, which can make text non-selectable and reduce sharpness when zoomed; desktop PDF export is preferable when searchable text or scalable vector output is required.
