MM files are commonly created by FreeMind or Freeplane, while ODT is required by LibreOffice Writer and other OpenDocument-compatible editors. Converting the file is useful when a mind map must be distributed as an editable outline or stored with office documents.
What the MM format is
MM is the XML-based native format used by FreeMind and supported by Freeplane for mind maps. It stores a map's central topic, branches, node text, notes, links, icons, styles, and relationships in a hierarchical structure. You may encounter .mm files when someone sends a FreeMind or Freeplane map, or when an older mind-mapping project is being moved to office software.
What the ODT format is
ODT is the OpenDocument Text format used by LibreOffice Writer, Apache OpenOffice, and many other office suites. It supports editable paragraphs, headings, lists, tables, images, styles, and page layout, and is suitable for reports, outlines, handouts, and long-term document exchange without a proprietary file dependency.
An ODT export normally represents the map as structured document content rather than preserving it as a fully editable graphical mind map. Choose ODT when the text hierarchy matters more than the original canvas layout.
How to convert MM to ODT
Using Freeplane
- Open the
.mmfile in Freeplane. If the file was created in FreeMind, Freeplane can usually read its XML structure directly. - Check node text, folded branches, hyperlinks, notes, and formatting before exporting. Expand branches that must appear in the document.
- Select File → Export → As OpenDocument Text or the similarly named OpenDocument export command, depending on the Freeplane version.
- Choose a destination and save the result with the
.odtextension. - Open the exported file in LibreOffice Writer and correct page breaks, heading levels, indentation, images, and link formatting before sharing it.
Using the online converter
You can convert the file for free on 101convert.com without installing software: select the MM-to-ODT converter, upload the .mm file, start the conversion, and download the generated .odt file. Open the result in LibreOffice Writer or another ODT-compatible editor for verification.
Quality and compatibility limitations
The conversion changes a spatial diagram into document structure. Branch order is generally represented through headings, paragraphs, or nested lists, but map coordinates, curved connectors, automatic layout, folding state, and some icons may not survive. Notes and hyperlinks can also require manual checking.
For a visual copy of the original map, export from Freeplane or FreeMind to PDF, SVG, or PNG instead of ODT. Keep the original .mm file as the authoritative editable map, because editing the ODT does not reliably update the mind map structure.
