Free online XMIND to ODT converter

LibreOffice Writer and other OpenDocument applications cannot edit an XMind project as a native mind map, so an .xmind file may need conversion to an editable .odt document. The result is suitable for sharing a structured outline, report, or archive without requiring XMind.

What the XMIND format is

.xmind is the project format used by XMind, a mind-mapping application used for brainstorming, planning, outlining, presentations, and flowcharts. An XMind project can contain topics and subtopics, relationships, boundaries, labels, notes, themes, hyperlinks, images, and attachments.

An XMIND file preserves the map's branches and free-form canvas for editing in XMind. It is not a word-processing document, and office applications generally cannot interpret its layout directly. The file is typically a packaged project containing structured map data and related resources; its internal details can vary between XMind versions.

What the ODT format is

.odt means OpenDocument Text. It is the open, ZIP-compressed XML document format used by LibreOffice Writer, Apache OpenOffice Writer, and other OpenDocument-compatible word processors.

ODT stores editable paragraphs, headings, lists, tables, styles, images, and page layout. It is useful when a mind map must become a report, meeting record, or nested outline that can be edited without XMind. It is also suitable for exchange between compatible office suites, although DOCX may be more appropriate when the recipients primarily use Microsoft Word.

Convert XMIND to ODT online

1. Open the XMIND-to-ODT converter on 101convert.com.
2. Upload the source file, such as project.xmind.
3. Select ODT as the output format and start the conversion.
4. Download the generated project.odt.
5. Open the result in LibreOffice Writer or another ODT-compatible editor and check the structure, text, images, and page layout.

Convert through XMind and LibreOffice

Some XMind editions provide Word or DOCX export, but menu names and available formats depend on the version and license. When that option exists, use this workflow:

1. Open project.xmind in XMind.
2. Choose File → Export and select Word or DOCX.
3. Save the intermediate file as project.docx.
4. Open the DOCX file in LibreOffice Writer.
5. Choose File → Save As, select ODF Text Document (.odt), and save.

If the installed XMind version has no Word or DOCX export, its PDF, PNG, SVG, or image export does not normally create an editable ODT document. LibreOffice can open some PDFs, but PDF-to-writer conversion is layout-oriented and is not a reliable way to recover a mind map's hierarchy. Use the converter or recreate the required outline in Writer instead.

Quality and compatibility limits

ODT represents a paginated document rather than XMind's free-form canvas. Main topics and subtopics may become headings or nested list items, while branch positions, relationship arrows, boundaries, map themes, floating topics, and some labels may be changed, flattened, or omitted.

Notes, hyperlinks, images, attachments, task metadata, and custom styling require checking after conversion. An ODT file is not a substitute for the original editable map: retain the .xmind file for future XMind editing. For a visually faithful copy, export the map to PDF or an image instead of converting it to a word-processing format.
