Convert XMIND to XLS

People convert mind maps when a legacy reporting system, spreadsheet workflow, or import process requires .xls instead of .xmind. A workbook also lets recipients sort and edit topic data without installing XMind.

What the XMIND format is

.xmind is XMind's native format for mind maps, brainstorming diagrams, project plans, outlines, and meeting structures. Depending on the XMind generation, the file is a package containing topic hierarchy, relationships, formatting, notes, labels, hyperlinks, task data, and possibly images or attachments.

XMind desktop editions create XMIND files; older maps may have been created with XMind 8 or an earlier release. The format represents information spatially and hierarchically, so it has no one-to-one equivalent in spreadsheet rows and columns.

What the XLS format is

.xls is the Microsoft Excel 97–2003 binary workbook format. It remains necessary for some legacy applications and import systems, although .xlsx is the preferred Excel format when compatibility with older software is not required.

An XLS workbook supports cells, formulas, filters, charts, and multiple worksheets, but each worksheet is limited to 65,536 rows and 256 columns. It cannot preserve an editable mind map's branch geometry, free-positioned objects, or visual theme.

How to convert XMIND to XLS

1. Open the file in the current XMind desktop application. If it fails to open, try XMind 8 or the XMind release that created the map; older and newer file structures are not always interchangeable.
2. Use File → Export → Excel. The command may instead be labelled Excel Workbook, and Excel export can be restricted by the XMind edition or subscription.
3. Select the map or sheets to export, choose a destination, and save. XMind normally produces .xlsx, not the legacy .xls format.
4. Open the workbook in Microsoft Excel or LibreOffice Calc. In Excel, choose File → Save As, select Excel 97–2003 Workbook (*.xls), and save. In Calc, choose File → Save As, select the Excel 97–2003 .xls format, and accept the compatibility warning.
5. Reopen the resulting .xls file and check topic order, row and column placement, notes, hyperlinks, formulas, character encoding, and worksheet names before importing or sharing it.

If the installed XMind edition does not provide Excel export, use an available .xlsx, .csv, or other tabular export as an intermediate file, then save it as .xls in Excel or Calc. CSV preserves plain tabular values only; it does not retain multiple worksheets, formulas, formatting, attachments, or mind-map relationships.

Online conversion options

Convertio can be used for a browser-based conversion when its current format selector explicitly offers XMIND as the input and XLS as the output. Upload a copy rather than the original, avoid confidential maps, and download the result promptly because online services may process or retain uploaded files temporarily. Direct online conversion can flatten branches differently from XMind's export.

For sensitive, large, or structurally complex maps, use XMind plus Excel or LibreOffice locally. Online converters are also unsuitable when the required output must preserve attachments, images, task metadata, or exact map layout.

Quality and compatibility limits

Exporters commonly represent topic levels as columns or rows and branches as spreadsheet records. Central-topic placement, branch geometry, boundaries, summaries, priorities, markers, labels, themes, and free-positioned objects may be discarded or simplified.

Notes, hyperlinks, attachments, images, and task properties vary by XMind version and export route, so verify them after conversion. If the receiving system accepts .xlsx, keep that format: it avoids the XLS row and column limits and generally preserves more workbook features. Convert to .xls only as the final compatibility step.
