A legacy spreadsheet import, older Microsoft Excel installation, or tabular reporting workflow may require a mind map in .xls rather than .xmind. Conversion extracts map content into spreadsheet cells, but it does not reproduce the visual map exactly.
What the XMIND format is
.xmind is the native document format used by XMind for mind maps, outlines, brainstorming diagrams, project plans, tree structures, and meeting plans. XMind users create and share these files to organize hierarchical information visually.
An XMIND file is generally a package containing structured map data and, depending on the XMind version and document, topic text, parent-child hierarchy, relationships, notes, labels, markers, hyperlinks, formatting, images, and attachments. It is not a spreadsheet, so its branch geometry and free-positioned objects have no direct equivalent in rows and columns. Older files may have been created with XMind 8 or an earlier release, and compatibility can vary between XMind generations.
What the XLS format is
.xls is the binary Microsoft Excel 97–2003 workbook format. Microsoft Excel, LibreOffice Calc, Apache OpenOffice Calc, and other spreadsheet applications can open it.
XLS is useful when a receiving application accepts only the legacy Excel format or when topics must be sorted, filtered, printed, calculated, or processed as tabular data. Each worksheet supports a maximum of 65,536 rows and 256 columns. If the receiving system accepts .xlsx, that newer format is usually preferable because it supports larger worksheets and newer workbook features.
How to convert XMIND to XLS

Quality and compatibility limits
Conversion normally flattens the map into records or fields such as topic, parent topic, indentation level, notes, and relationships. The output may omit or simplify central-topic placement, branch geometry, colors, themes, boundaries, summaries, markers, icons, connectors, free-positioned objects, images, and attachments.
Notes, hyperlinks, task information, formulas, and multiple-map or multiple-sheet structure depend on the converter and the XMind version. A .csv intermediate file preserves plain tabular values only; it does not preserve worksheets, formulas, formatting, attachments, or map relationships. A spreadsheet export also cannot guarantee that every relationship will remain an editable spreadsheet feature.
Keep the original .xmind file as the authoritative copy. If the map may exceed 65,536 rows or 256 columns, or if the recipient supports it, retain the intermediate .xlsx file instead of converting to XLS. Open the final workbook in the application that will receive it, because saving in the legacy format can change unsupported formatting, formulas, column widths, and embedded objects.
