Free online XMIND to MD converter

Markdown is useful when a mind map must be edited in a text editor, stored in Git, published in documentation, or opened without XMind. Converting an .xmind file to .md turns its topic hierarchy into Markdown headings or nested lists.

What the XMIND format is

.xmind is the native project format used by XMind for mind maps, outlines, flowcharts, timelines, and related diagrams. An XMIND file can contain topics, relationships, boundaries, labels, notes, hyperlinks, markers, attachments, and multiple sheets. XMind desktop applications create and edit these files, so they commonly appear when a map is exchanged between XMind users or exported from a planning, study, or documentation workflow.

The file is a packaged project rather than a plain-text document. Its internal data and resources may use different structures across XMind versions, which is why renaming .xmind to .md does not convert it.

What the MD format is

.md normally contains Markdown, a plain-text markup language supported by GitHub, GitLab, code editors, static-site generators, note-taking applications, and documentation systems. Markdown represents structure with characters such as # for headings, - for list items, and bracketed link syntax.

Markdown is smaller, searchable, version-control friendly, and editable without specialist diagram software. It represents the map's textual hierarchy well, but it does not reproduce the original canvas layout, branches, colors, icons, floating topics, or graphical relationships unless the converter has a specific mapping for them.

How to actually convert XMIND to MD

Using the built-in 101convert.com converter:

1. Open the XMIND-to-MD conversion page on 101convert.com.
2. Choose the source .xmind file and upload it.
3. Start the conversion and wait for processing to finish.
4. Download the resulting .md file and open it in a Markdown editor to check headings, lists, links, and notes.

This method requires no installed conversion software. Keep the original XMIND file because the Markdown output is a textual representation, not a reversible copy of the complete diagram.

Using XMind desktop: If the installed version provides Markdown export, open the map and select File → Export → Markdown, choose the destination, and save the generated .md file. Menu names and available export formats vary between XMind editions; if Markdown is absent, use the built-in converter instead of changing the extension.

Quality and compatibility considerations

• The central topic usually becomes the document title or first heading, while child topics become nested headings or list items.
• Deep hierarchies can produce awkward heading levels; inspect the result and adjust heading depth before publishing.
• Notes may become paragraph text, and hyperlinks may survive as Markdown links, but images, attachments, markers, boundaries, labels, relationship lines, and visual positioning may be omitted or simplified.
• A map with several sheets may produce separate sections or files depending on the converter. Verify every sheet after conversion.
• Markdown has multiple dialects. If the destination requires GitHub-Flavored Markdown, check tables, task lists, raw HTML, and link syntax in that destination.
