What the MD format is
.md is a plain-text Markdown file. Markdown represents headings, nested lists, links, emphasis, code, and other document elements with simple characters, so it works in editors such as Visual Studio Code, Obsidian, and many documentation platforms. It is also suitable for Git repositories, static-site generators, and long-term text archiving.
Unlike a visual mind map, Markdown primarily represents hierarchy. It can preserve the map's topic and branch structure, but it does not reproduce the original canvas layout or visual theme.
