Free online EMMX to MD converter

An EMMX file must often be converted when a mind map needs to be edited as plain text, stored in a documentation repository, or opened by a Markdown-based mapping tool. Markdown also produces much smaller, version-control-friendly files than the original EdrawMind project.

What the EMMX format is

EMMX is the native project format used by EdrawMind for mind maps and related diagrams. It stores the map hierarchy together with topics, notes, relationships, hyperlinks, attachments, themes, and layout information. You typically encounter it when a map is created or saved in the EdrawMind desktop or web application.

EMMX is a structured project format rather than a plain-text interchange format. Renaming map.emmx to map.md does not convert the contents and will not produce a usable Markdown document.

What the MD format is

MD usually means Markdown: a UTF-8 plain-text format that represents headings, lists, links, emphasis, code, and other document structure with lightweight punctuation. In mind-mapping workflows, a Markdown file can represent the map as nested headings or lists and can be rendered by documentation systems, note-taking applications, static-site generators, and Markdown-based mind-map tools such as Markmap.

MD is easier to edit with a text editor, compare in Git, archive, and reuse in documentation pipelines. It does not normally preserve the visual canvas, theme, branch geometry, floating topics, connector styling, or every EdrawMind-specific object.

How to actually convert EMMX to MD

The built-in converter on 101convert.com can convert the file online for free without installing software:

1. Open the EMMX-to-MD conversion page on 101convert.com.
2. Select map.emmx from your computer.
3. Choose MD or Markdown as the output format if the page presents a format selector.
4. Start the conversion and download the resulting map.md file.
5. Open the output in a plain-text editor and check that the topic nesting, headings, links, and notes transferred as expected.

If EdrawMind provides Markdown export in the installed version, use File → Export and select Markdown, then save the result as map.md. The exact menu label can vary between EdrawMind releases; use the export function rather than changing the filename extension.

Quality and compatibility limitations

The conversion maps a visual mind map to a linear text structure. Main topics and child-topic levels generally become Markdown headings or nested lists, but canvas position and graphical styling cannot be represented by standard MD.

Review maps containing summaries, callouts, boundaries, equations, images, attachments, relationship lines, or custom formatting manually. Depending on the converter and EdrawMind version, these elements may be omitted, converted to text, or retained as links. Keep the original EMMX file as the editable master when the visual layout or proprietary EdrawMind features must remain available.
