EMMX files are useful for editing mind maps in EdrawMind, but many scripts, editors, and archival systems accept only plain TXT. Converting the map to TXT produces a lightweight, searchable outline that can be shared without mind-mapping software.

What the EMMX format is

EMMX is the native project format used by EdrawMind for mind maps and related visual diagrams. It stores the map structure, including topics, subtopics, relationships, styling, notes, and other diagram data. You typically encounter it when someone sends an EdrawMind project, when a map is saved for later editing, or when an EdrawMind template is shared.

What the TXT format is

TXT is a plain-text format containing characters without map layouts, colors, images, connectors, or other visual styling. It works with Notepad, code editors, command-line tools, document-management systems, and most operating systems.

TXT is appropriate when you need the topic names and hierarchy for searching, copying, scripting, archiving, or importing into software that cannot read EMMX. Its small size and broad compatibility come at the cost of losing the original visual presentation.

How to convert EMMX to TXT

Using the built-in online converter

  1. Open the EMMX-to-TXT converter on 101convert.com.
  2. Select or drag the .emmx file into the upload area.
  3. Choose TXT as the output format.
  4. Start the conversion and download the generated plain-text file.
  5. Open the result in a text editor and check that topic order, indentation, and non-ASCII characters are correct.

This option requires no installed software and is suitable when you need the map content as a readable outline rather than an editable visual diagram.

Using EdrawMind as a desktop fallback

  1. Open the EMMX project in EdrawMind.
  2. Switch to the outline view if the application provides one for the current map.
  3. Use File → Export and select a text-compatible outline format if TXT is available in your version.
  4. If direct TXT export is unavailable, export to Word or another outline format, open the exported file, and save or copy its contents as .txt using UTF-8 encoding.

For a small map, selecting the outline content in EdrawMind and pasting it into Notepad or another plain-text editor is also sufficient.

Quality and compatibility

TXT cannot preserve canvas position, branches as drawn, themes, icons, images, hyperlinks, relationship lines, or other graphical properties. The conversion represents hierarchy with line order, indentation, prefixes, or another plain-text convention, so inspect deeply nested branches after conversion.

Save the result as UTF-8 when the map contains accented characters, non-Latin scripts, symbols, or emoji. A legacy encoding such as Windows-1252 can replace unsupported characters or make them display incorrectly.

Notes, summaries, attachments, and metadata may not be included if the converter exports only visible topic labels. Open the EMMX file in EdrawMind first when those fields are needed, then use an outline or document export that explicitly includes them.
