What the MM format is
In the mind-map and flowchart context, .mm is the XML-based FreeMind mind-map format. FreeMind and Freeplane create MM files containing a tree of nodes, including labels, parent-child relationships, notes, hyperlinks, icons, colors, folding state, and other map metadata.
MM files are common when a map is exchanged between FreeMind-compatible applications or stored as an editable project. Although the file is XML and can be opened in a code editor, its markup is intended for mind-map software rather than direct reading.
What the TXT format is
.txt is an unformatted character file. It is suitable for basic editors, command-line tools, document indexing, version-control systems, email, and applications that accept plain text.
A TXT export normally represents the map as indented lines, for example:

Introduction
Plain text is smaller and more portable than an MM project, but it cannot retain branches as a graphical canvas, node colors, icons, images, drawing positions, folded-state information, or most rich formatting.
How to actually convert MM to TXT
Using the built-in online converter
You can convert the file on 101convert.com for free without installing software:
- Open the MM-to-TXT converter on 101convert.com.
- Upload the
.mmfile. - Select
TXTas the output format if the format selector is shown. - Start the conversion and download the resulting
.txtfile. - Open the result in a text editor and check that indentation and non-ASCII characters are displayed correctly.
Using Freeplane
Freeplane is a suitable desktop option because it natively reads FreeMind MM files and can export the node tree as plain text:
- Open Freeplane and choose File → Open, then select the
.mmfile. - Review the map and expand any branches whose contents must appear in the export.
- Choose File → Export → As plain text or the equivalent plain-text export command in your Freeplane version.
- Choose an output filename ending in
.txt, select UTF-8 when an encoding option is available, and save.
Menu names vary between Freeplane releases. If the export command is unavailable, use the application's copy or node-list export function and paste the hierarchy into a UTF-8 text file.
Using FreeMind
Open the file in FreeMind and check File → Export. Some releases provide a text or structured-text export; if plain TXT is not listed, export the visible node structure to an available text-compatible format, then open it in a text editor and save it as .txt. Renaming an MM file to TXT without exporting does not convert it: the result remains XML markup.
Quality, compatibility, and limitations
- Hierarchy is the main preserved data. A good exporter converts parent-child levels into indentation or another line-based structure.
- Node notes, hyperlinks, icons, images, colors, font settings, summaries, and graphical connectors may be omitted or reduced to labels. Check the output if those fields matter.
- Use UTF-8 to preserve accented characters, non-Latin scripts, and symbols. A legacy ANSI encoding can replace unsupported characters with question marks.
- Collapsed branches may be excluded by exporters that process only visible nodes. Expand all required branches before exporting, or select an option such as exporting the complete map.
- TXT has no standard syntax for mind maps. One program may use spaces, tabs, bullets, or outline numbering, so a TXT file exported by one application may require cleanup before another application can parse it.
