A program, website, or document system may require a JPEG when the original mind-map application is unavailable. Converting the file produces a broadly supported image for sharing, presentations, printing, or archiving, but it removes the map's editable structure.
What the MM format is
.mm is an XML-based mind-map format used mainly by FreeMind and Freeplane. It stores nodes, branches, labels, notes, icons, hyperlinks, formatting, and the parent-child relationships that define the map.
MM files are used for planning diagrams, brainstorms, project outlines, study maps, and knowledge structures. A text editor can show the XML source, but it cannot render the file as a visual mind map; use FreeMind, Freeplane, or another compatible mind-mapping application.
What the JPEG format is
JPEG, identified by .jpg or .jpeg, is a compressed raster-image format supported by web browsers, phones, image viewers, office software, and presentation tools. It creates one shareable image that is usually smaller than an uncompressed bitmap.
JPEG compression is lossy. It can blur small text, thin connector lines, and sharp diagram edges, and it does not preserve MM hyperlinks, folding controls, notes, searchable text as separate objects, or editable node relationships. The exported image is a visual snapshot only.
How to convert MM to JPEG
Using the built-in converter:
- Open the converter on 101convert.com; no software installation is required.
- Upload the
.mmfile and selectJPEGas the output format. - Start the conversion and download the generated
.jpgor.jpegfile. - Open the result and check that the complete map, including distant branches and small labels, is visible.
Do not upload confidential maps, personal information, or commercially sensitive content to an online service unless its handling policy is acceptable. Keep the original .mm file because the JPEG cannot be converted back into an editable mind map.
Using FreeMind or Freeplane:
- Open the MM file in FreeMind or Freeplane and verify that the required branches, labels, icons, and notes are displayed.
- Use the application's image export command, commonly File → Export → JPEG. Menu names and available formats vary by version.
- Choose a filename such as
project-map.jpgand save the export. - Inspect the image at its actual size. If the application offers export dimensions or image quality settings, increase the resolution and use high JPEG quality for maps containing small text.
If the installed mind-mapping application exports only PNG, choose File → Export → PNG, then open the PNG in GIMP or IrfanView and use File → Export As or File → Save As to select JPEG. This two-step method is preferable to opening the MM XML directly in an image editor, because an image editor cannot interpret the mind-map structure.
Quality and compatibility limits
A large map may be rendered as one very wide or tall image. At normal viewing size, its text can become unreadable even when the file itself opens correctly. Reduce unnecessary branches, adjust the map layout, or export at a larger pixel size before converting.
Use PNG instead of JPEG when fine lines, small text, or flat-color diagrams must remain sharp; PNG uses lossless compression. Use PDF or SVG when the destination supports scalable output or printing, but confirm that the chosen application preserves the required fonts, links, and page layout. JPEG does not provide the same scalability or editability.
