Free online FODG to JPEG converter

A FODG diagram may need conversion when a document portal, browser, phone, or presentation tool accepts JPEG but not editable OpenDocument graphics. JPEG also provides a compact, widely supported image for sharing or embedding a finished mind map or flowchart.

What the FODG format is

FODG is the flat XML form of OpenDocument Graphics. LibreOffice Draw creates and opens it for vector drawings such as mind maps, flowcharts, organizational diagrams, and technical schematics. Unlike the packaged .odg format, FODG stores the drawing in one readable XML file. Its objects, text, connectors, layers, and page settings remain editable in compatible graphics software; FODG is not intended for ordinary image viewers.

What the JPEG format is

JPEG is a raster image format supported by web browsers, phones, operating systems, office software, and messaging platforms. It uses lossy compression, which can produce much smaller files than an uncompressed image, but the exported pixels no longer contain editable shapes or text. JPEG does not support transparency and is less suitable than PNG for diagrams with fine lines, small labels, or large areas of flat color.

How to convert FODG to JPEG

LibreOffice Draw is the most practical desktop option because it is designed for OpenDocument graphics and can export the rendered page as an image.

1. Open the .fodg file in LibreOffice Draw.
2. Check the page size, orientation, object placement, text wrapping, connector visibility, and background before exporting.
3. Choose File → Export.
4. Select JPEG - Joint Photographic Experts Group or the .jpg format, enter the output filename, and choose Save.
5. Set the image dimensions or resolution when the export dialog provides that option, then choose a suitable JPEG quality and confirm.

For a simple command-line conversion on a system with LibreOffice installed, use:

Use the graphical method when page dimensions, rendering, or JPEG settings need inspection. Command-line conversion is useful for repeated files, but the output should still be checked because text and line visibility depend on the source page size and export dimensions.

Quality and compatibility limits

• Conversion rasterizes the complete drawing. The JPEG cannot preserve editable objects, layers, connectors, fonts, or XML structure, so keep the original FODG for later changes.
• Low pixel dimensions and strong compression can blur small text and thin connector lines. Use the largest practical output dimensions and a quality setting around 90–95%; exporting larger and then reducing the image can improve readability.
• JPEG has no alpha channel. Transparent regions are rendered against a background selected by the exporting application, commonly white. Use PNG instead when transparency or sharp diagram linework must be preserved.
• Fonts unavailable on the conversion system may be substituted, changing text width or line breaks. Open the result and verify labels, arrows, page boundaries, and background color.
