A flowchart or mind map saved as FODG may need EPS for a print shop, publishing workflow, or graphics application that accepts Encapsulated PostScript. EPS keeps the diagram as scalable artwork instead of requiring a raster image.
What the FODG format is
FODG is the Flat OpenDocument Graphics format: an uncompressed XML representation of an OpenDocument drawing. LibreOffice Draw and Apache OpenOffice Draw create FODG files for flowcharts, mind maps, diagrams, connectors, shapes, text, and other page-based graphics.
FODG is less common for distribution than .odg, the zipped OpenDocument Graphics format, but it is useful when the XML source must be inspectable, processed, or stored in version control. LibreOffice Draw is the most practical application for opening and exporting it.
What the EPS format is
EPS, or Encapsulated PostScript, is a page-oriented vector graphics format used by older desktop-publishing, illustration, and professional print workflows. It can store paths, text, fills, strokes, and embedded bitmap data at a defined page or bounding-box size.
EPS artwork scales without the pixelation of a bitmap and is accepted by some prepress and legacy graphics applications. It is usually a poor choice for interactive editing of the original diagram because the conversion can flatten document structure, layers, and application-specific objects.
How to actually convert FODG to EPS
Using LibreOffice Draw
- Install LibreOffice and open the
.fodgfile in LibreOffice Draw. - Check the page size, object positions, text, connectors, and line weights before exporting.
- Choose File → Export.
- Set the output filename with the
.epsextension and selectEPS - Encapsulated PostScript (.eps)as the file type. - Confirm the EPS export options, including the page or drawing area and preview settings if offered, then save the file.
- Open the resulting EPS in the intended graphics or prepress application and inspect the artwork at high zoom.
Using a command-line intermediate
If the installed LibreOffice version does not provide EPS in its Draw export list, create a PDF first and convert the PDF with Poppler's pdftops utility:
libreoffice --headless --convert-to pdf --outdir out diagram.fodg
pdftops -f 1 -l 1 -eps out/diagram.pdf diagram.eps
The second command creates EPS for the first page. Repeat it with different -f and -l values for additional pages, because EPS workflows generally expect one page or illustration per file.
Converting without installed software
You can convert the file for free on the 101convert.com website without installing software. Upload the FODG file, select EPS as the output format, run the conversion, and download the result; review the downloaded artwork before using it for production.
Quality, compatibility, and limitations
- Page geometry matters: EPS uses a page or bounding box, so objects outside the FODG page may be clipped or omitted. Set the Draw page to the required final dimensions before exporting.
- Text depends on fonts: A missing font can cause substitution, changed line breaks, or altered text placement. Install the source fonts on the conversion system and verify the result on the destination system.
- Effects may change: Transparency, soft shadows, complex gradients, filters, and some blend modes may be simplified or converted differently by the PostScript exporter.
- Multipage drawings need separate handling: EPS is commonly used for a single page or figure, while an FODG document can contain multiple pages.
- Inspect connectors and small labels: thin lines and small text can expose differences in stroke rendering or font substitution more readily than large shapes.
