What the VSTX format is

.vstx is the XML-based template format used by Microsoft Visio 2013 and later. It stores reusable diagram pages, masters, themes, styles, shapes, connectors, and layout settings for flowcharts, organizational diagrams, network maps, and other technical drawings. You usually encounter VSTX files when a colleague sends a Visio template or when a diagram is distributed as a reusable starting point rather than as a finished .vsdx drawing.

What the EPS format is

.eps is an Encapsulated PostScript graphics format used by prepress, illustration, and page-layout applications. It describes vector paths, fills, strokes, and text, so line diagrams can be printed at different sizes without ordinary bitmap scaling artifacts. EPS is useful when a supplier specifically requires PostScript artwork, but it does not preserve Visio template behavior, editable Visio masters, themes, or interactive diagram structure.

How to actually convert VSTX to EPS

Using Microsoft Visio and Inkscape

1. Open the file in Microsoft Visio with File → Open. If the VSTX contains a blank template page, add or select the page and populate it before exporting.
2. Export an intermediate vector file with File → Save As, choose SVG (*.svg), and save each required page separately. If SVG is unavailable in your Visio version, choose PDF instead.
3. Open the SVG in Inkscape. Check the page size, line weights, arrowheads, text placement, and any imported gradients or transparency.
4. Choose File → Save a Copy or File → Save As, select Encapsulated PostScript (*.eps), and save the result. Inkscape may require Ghostscript for EPS export; install it if the EPS option or export operation is unavailable.
5. Open the EPS in the receiving application and inspect the complete page at the intended output size.

For a PDF intermediate, open the exported PDF in Adobe Illustrator, select the required page, then use File → Save As and choose Illustrator EPS (*.eps). This route is often preferable when Visio’s PDF export preserves text and effects more accurately than its SVG export.

Quality and compatibility limits

Visio templates can contain multiple pages, hidden layers, masters, unsupported effects, and fonts that are not installed on the conversion computer. EPS normally represents one page or artwork area per file, so export additional Visio pages separately. Convert text to outlines in the final illustration application only when the recipient requires font-independent output; outlining prevents text edits and can increase file size.

SVG and PDF are intermediate formats rather than equivalent copies of the VSTX structure. Review page boundaries, connector positions, clipping, transparency, patterns, shadows, and font substitutions after conversion. EPS is primarily a static output format and will not retain Visio editing features.
