A VSTX file is useful for diagrams in Microsoft Visio, while DOCX is the required format for editing and sharing content in Microsoft Word. Converting the file is usually needed when a flowchart or mind map must be placed in a report, edited with Word tools, or archived with other office documents.

What the VSTX format is

VSTX is the Office Open XML template format used by Microsoft Visio. It stores reusable diagram layouts, themes, page settings, stencils, masters, and sample shapes for flowcharts, organizational charts, network diagrams, process maps, and related visual documents.

Microsoft Visio creates VSTX files, particularly in Visio 2013 and newer. You may encounter one when a diagram was distributed as a reusable template rather than as a completed drawing. Unlike a DOCX file, VSTX preserves Visio-specific shapes, connectors, layers, data fields, and diagram relationships.

What the DOCX format is

DOCX is Microsoft Word’s Office Open XML document format. It is designed for paragraphs, tables, headings, images, captions, comments, tracked changes, and page-based printing.

DOCX is the better target when recipients need to open the result in Word, add explanatory text, include the diagram in a report, apply document styles, or store it with other office files. It does not provide a native equivalent for Visio’s connectors, shape data, stencils, or automatic diagram layout.

How to actually convert VSTX to DOCX

Using Microsoft Visio and Word

  1. Make a copy of the original .vstx file.
  2. Open the copy in Microsoft Visio. If Visio treats it as a template, create a drawing from the template and save that working file as .vsdx through File → Save As.
  3. Open the page containing the required flowchart or mind map. For multi-page files, process each page separately because Word does not reproduce Visio page structure automatically.
  4. Select the diagram with Ctrl+A, then copy it with Ctrl+C. If the page contains unrelated objects, select only the required shapes and connectors.
  5. In Word, create or open a document and choose Home → Paste → Paste Special. Select Microsoft Visio Drawing Object to keep an embedded Visio object that can be edited on systems with Visio installed.
  6. For a fixed visual result, paste as an Enhanced Metafile or insert an SVG exported from Visio through Insert → Pictures. Vector formats remain sharper than screenshots when the document is printed or zoomed.
  7. Resize the pasted diagram, check page breaks and labels, then save the result through File → Save As using the .docx extension.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

A DOCX conversion normally produces a representation of the Visio page, not a fully editable Word recreation of every Visio object. Embedded Visio content retains more structure but requires compatible Visio software; SVG or Enhanced Metafile output is more portable but behaves mainly as artwork.

Check connector positions, font substitution, page orientation, transparent fills, line weights, hyperlinks, and text that extends beyond shape boundaries. Large diagrams may need landscape orientation or a smaller page scale in Word. Converting through PDF or a raster image can preserve appearance, but it usually removes selectable text and makes later editing difficult.

Visio features such as data-linked graphics, layers, containers, formulas, custom properties, and automatic layout rules generally do not become native DOCX elements. Keep the original .vstx or resulting .vsdx alongside the DOCX if the diagram may need structural editing later.
