What the VSTX format is
VSTX is the XML-based template format used by Microsoft Visio for flowcharts, network diagrams, organizational charts, floor plans, and other technical drawings. Visio templates can contain page layouts, themes, stencils, styles, and reusable shape definitions.
Microsoft Visio creates VSTX files, usually when a diagram is saved as a reusable template. You may encounter one when downloading a Visio diagram template or receiving a file intended to create new diagrams rather than represent a finished drawing. A VSTX file is a ZIP-based Office Open XML package, but its internal XML parts are Visio-specific and cannot be renamed directly to ODG.
What the ODG format is
ODG is the OpenDocument Graphics format used by LibreOffice Draw and other OpenDocument-compatible applications. It stores drawing pages, text, shapes, connectors, images, layers, styles, and page settings in an editable package.
ODG is suitable for flowcharts and general vector diagrams when the recipient uses LibreOffice, Apache OpenOffice, or another application with OpenDocument support. It is an open, application-independent format, but it does not preserve every Visio-specific feature such as custom shape data, VBA content, proprietary stencils, or advanced connection behavior.
How to convert VSTX to ODG
Using Microsoft Visio and LibreOffice Draw
- Make a copy of the original
.vstxfile. Open the copy in Microsoft Visio. Because VSTX is a template, Visio may create a new drawing from it instead of displaying it as an ordinary finished diagram. - If Visio opens a new untitled drawing, check that the required pages, shapes, themes, and stencils are present. Save the resulting drawing as
.vsdxif you need an intermediate editable Visio copy. - In Visio, select File → Save As, choose
SVGas the output type, and save each required page. Visio versions differ in how they export multipage documents; export pages separately when necessary. - Open the exported
.svgfile in LibreOffice Draw with File → Open. Review text, connectors, page size, fonts, and line endings. - Save the imported drawing with File → Save As, select
ODG - OpenDocument Drawing (.odg), and confirm the format choice. Repeat the process for each page if the source diagram has multiple pages.
SVG is the most practical interchange format when Visio is available because it preserves the visual geometry and vector quality. LibreOffice Draw may import the SVG as grouped objects; use Format → Group → Enter Group or the equivalent ungroup command when individual elements must be edited.
Using the built-in online converter
You can convert the file on 101convert.com for free without installing software. Upload the VSTX file, choose ODG as the output format when offered, start the conversion, and download the resulting file. Open the ODG in LibreOffice Draw and verify page layout, fonts, connectors, and text before sharing it.
Quality and compatibility limitations
A template does not always contain a completed diagram. If the VSTX only defines reusable styles or stencils, the conversion may produce a blank or incomplete page; create a drawing from the template in Visio first.
The SVG route generally preserves appearance better than direct format translation, but it does not preserve Visio shape data, formulas, comments, custom properties, macros, or native Visio stencils. Text can change position when the required font is unavailable, and connectors may no longer remain attached to shapes as they were in Visio.
For an editable ODG, inspect and regroup imported objects in LibreOffice Draw. For archival fidelity, retain the original VSTX or VSDX alongside the ODG and, if exact visual reproduction matters, also keep a PDF export.
