Free online VSTX to DXF converter

CAD programs and plotters require DXF, while Visio templates use VSTX to store reusable diagram layouts. Converting the template makes its flowchart or mind-map geometry available for CAD editing, drafting, or exchange.

What the VSTX format is

VSTX is the Office Open XML template format used by Microsoft Visio. It stores reusable pages, shapes, connectors, masters, styles, backgrounds, and layout settings for diagrams such as flowcharts, organizational charts, network diagrams, and mind maps.

Microsoft Visio creates VSTX files when a diagram is saved as a template. A VSTX file is not the same as a finished VSDX drawing: opening it normally creates a new drawing based on the template, after which you can add or edit diagram content.

What the DXF format is

DXF, or Drawing Exchange Format, is a text-based CAD format originally developed for AutoCAD. It represents two-dimensional geometry through entities such as lines, arcs, circles, polylines, text, blocks, and layers.

DXF is useful when the converted diagram must be opened in AutoCAD, DraftSight, LibreCAD, BricsCAD, CNC preparation software, or another CAD application. Its broad support makes it suitable for exchanging basic vector geometry, but it does not preserve Visio’s full template behavior, shape intelligence, themes, or data-linked features.

How to actually convert VSTX to DXF

Using the online converter

1. Open the VSTX-to-DXF converter on 101convert.com.
2. Upload the .vstx file and select DXF as the output format.
3. Start the conversion and download the resulting .dxf file when processing finishes.
4. Open the DXF in a CAD viewer and check the page scale, text, connectors, and all required diagram pages.

This option requires no installed software. If the VSTX is only a blank template, create or save a drawing from it first; a converter cannot invent diagram content that the template does not contain.

Using Microsoft Visio

1. Open the VSTX in the desktop version of Microsoft Visio. Visio may create a new untitled drawing from the template.
2. Complete the diagram and save it as a Visio drawing if required, using File → Save As.
3. Choose File → Save As or File → Export, select DXF or AutoCAD Drawing (*.dxf), and confirm the output location.
4. In any CAD export settings, select the intended page, drawing scale, units, and export scope. Export the active page or selected shapes according to the available options.
5. Open the result in a CAD application and save it again if a different DXF version or encoding is required.

Quality and compatibility limits

DXF preserves drawable geometry rather than Visio semantics. Connectors generally become lines or polylines, grouped shapes may become separate entities, and Visio-specific containers, hyperlinks, formulas, shape data, themes, and automatic layout rules are normally lost.

Review text after conversion because Visio fonts, text rotation, line spacing, arrowheads, and font substitution can change in CAD software. VSTX files with multiple pages, hidden layers, or backgrounds may require separate page or layer checks; CAD export settings do not always reproduce Visio visibility rules.

Set the correct measurement units before export and verify a known dimension in the DXF. A drawing that looks correct can still be incorrectly scaled if Visio page units and the CAD model units differ.
