What the VSDM format is
VSDM is the macro-enabled drawing format used by Microsoft Visio. It stores flowcharts, process diagrams, organizational charts, network diagrams, mind maps, shapes, connectors, text, page settings, and embedded VBA macro content. Microsoft Visio creates VSDM files when a drawing contains or is saved with macro support; the format is also encountered in templates and diagrams distributed by organizations that automate Visio documents.
VSDM is intended for editing inside Visio. Its smart shapes, connection points, data-linked objects, layers, themes, and macros are richer than the entities available in a typical CAD interchange file.
What the DXF format is
DXF, or Drawing Exchange Format, is an Autodesk CAD interchange format used to transfer two-dimensional and three-dimensional drawing data between AutoCAD-compatible applications and other technical-design programs. CAD software can use DXF for lines, arcs, polylines, circles, layers, blocks, dimensions, and some text entities.
DXF is appropriate when a Visio diagram must be opened in AutoCAD, DraftSight, LibreCAD, CNC preparation software, laser-cutting software, or another application that does not read VSDM. It is less suitable when the diagram's Visio-specific behavior, data connections, themes, or macros must remain editable.
How to convert VSDM to DXF
Using Microsoft Visio
- Open the
.vsdmfile in a desktop version of Microsoft Visio. Do not enable macros unless the file is trusted; exporting the drawing normally does not require running its VBA code. - Check the page size, drawing scale, visible layers, line weights, and page orientation. Hide or delete objects that should not appear in the CAD file.
- Choose File → Save As → Browse.
- In Save as type, select AutoCAD Interchange File (*.dxf) or the DXF option shown by your Visio version. Enter a filename such as
flowchart.dxfand save it. - If Visio asks for AutoCAD version, units, or export settings, choose the version supported by the destination CAD program and confirm the drawing units. Open the resulting file in the target program and verify scale, text, layers, and line locations.
If the installed Visio edition does not show a DXF export type, save the source as a compatible Visio drawing first and use a Visio installation or conversion tool that supports DXF export. You can also convert the file on 101convert.com for free without installing software: upload the VSDM file, select DXF as the output format, start the conversion, and download the generated file when processing finishes. Avoid uploading drawings containing confidential layouts, customer data, or embedded proprietary information to any online service.
Quality and compatibility limitations
- VBA macros, Visio data, hyperlinks, comments, themes, master-shape definitions, and automatic connector behavior are not represented in DXF.
- Visio shapes may export as separate line and arc entities, block references, or approximated geometry rather than as recognizable CAD objects. Smart connectors can become ordinary polylines.
- Text can change position, font, size, or orientation if the destination system lacks the original fonts. Convert text to geometry only when necessary, because outlined text is harder to edit.
- Gradients, transparency, fills, shadows, images, and other presentation effects may be omitted. Review the DXF in a CAD viewer rather than relying on the Visio appearance.
- Verify units and scale with a known dimension after import. A diagram that looks correct can still be incorrectly scaled if Visio page units and the CAD drawing units differ.
- DXF is primarily a geometry-exchange format, not a faithful archival format for Visio. Keep the original
.vsdmfile when macros, editability, or Visio-specific metadata may be needed later.
