Free online VSDM to DOC converter

VSDM files often need conversion when a diagram must be delivered to someone who has Microsoft Word rather than Visio. DOC is also useful for combining a flowchart with written documentation, although it does not preserve Visio editing features as well as a native drawing format.

What the VSDM format is

VSDM is Microsoft Visio’s macro-enabled drawing format. It stores flowcharts, process diagrams, network maps, organizational charts, and other structured drawings in an XML-based package that can also contain VBA macros.

Microsoft Visio creates and opens VSDM files, typically when a drawing includes macros or is saved with macro support enabled. VSDM files are common in organizations that use Visio for business-process documentation and technical diagrams. The format is related to VSDX, but VSDM is intended to retain macro content.

What the DOC format is

DOC is the legacy Microsoft Word 97–2003 document format. It is suitable for reports, specifications, procedures, and archived documents that must open in older versions of Word or other word processors.

A DOC file can contain pasted Visio objects, exported images, text, tables, and captions. It is not a native flowchart format, so diagram shapes, connectors, layers, data, and macros generally cannot remain fully editable after conversion.

How to convert VSDM to DOC

Using Microsoft Visio and Word

For better control over layout, open the file in Visio, remove or review macros, and export the diagram through File → Export to PDF, SVG, PNG, or another available visual format. Open Word, create a document, and insert the exported file through Insert → Pictures or Insert → Object. Save it as File → Save As → Word 97–2003 Document (*.doc).

For a small diagram, select the required Visio shapes, copy them, and paste them into Word. Choose a picture paste option for stable appearance, or use a Visio object option when the recipient also has compatible Visio software.

Quality and compatibility limitations

The conversion does not normally preserve VBA macros, Visio layers, Shape Data, hyperlinks, containers, themes, or connector behavior in an editable DOC document. Exporting as a raster image can make small labels unreadable; use SVG, PDF, or a high-resolution image when Word will be printed.

Fonts installed in Visio but missing from the destination computer can change line wrapping and page layout. Set the Word page orientation and margins before inserting a large diagram, and use Keep source formatting or a fixed-size image when consistent positioning matters. Keep the original .vsdm file because DOC is a presentation or documentation copy, not a reliable replacement for the editable Visio source.
