What the VDX format is

VDX is the XML-based drawing format used by Microsoft Visio for diagrams such as flowcharts, organizational charts, network maps, process maps, and other technical drawings. Microsoft Visio 2010 and earlier commonly used .vdx for XML-based diagrams; newer Visio versions generally use .vsdx.

A VDX file stores pages, shapes, connectors, text, styles, and diagram relationships in structured XML. You normally encounter it when receiving an older Visio drawing, exporting a diagram from a legacy workflow, or retrieving files from an archive. Visio is the most reliable application for opening it because it can interpret the original shape geometry, connectors, themes, and page settings.

What the DOC format is

DOC is the binary Microsoft Word document format associated mainly with Word 97–2003. It is useful when the recipient uses an older Word version, a document-management system that accepts only .doc, or a workflow that requires Word comments, headers, pagination, or printed documentation.

DOC is not a native diagram format. A conversion normally places each Visio page into Word as an image or embedded object. The surrounding Word content remains editable, but Visio connectors and shapes usually cannot be edited as independent Word objects.

How to convert VDX to DOC

Using Microsoft Visio and Word

1. Make a copy of the original .vdx file.
2. Open the copy in Microsoft Visio. If Visio prompts for a format conversion, accept it and check that all pages, labels, connectors, and fonts display correctly.
3. Use File → Export → Create Word Document if that command is available. Select the pages or diagram content required and save the generated Word file, normally as .docx.
4. Open the resulting file in Microsoft Word and choose File → Save As. Select Word 97–2003 Document (*.doc), then confirm the compatibility warning.
5. Reopen the saved .doc file and inspect page breaks, diagram scale, text wrapping, and multi-page order.

If Visio does not provide Create Word Document, export the drawing with File → Export → PDF, open the PDF in Word, and save the resulting document as .doc. This fallback preserves the appearance better than manually copying individual shapes, but Word may treat the imported pages as grouped graphics or reconstructed text.

Quality and compatibility limitations

• Editing: A DOC export generally preserves the diagram visually but does not convert Visio shapes into native, independently editable Word shapes.
• Page size: Visio pages may use large or nonstandard dimensions. Word can scale them to the document page, which may make labels difficult to read; set the Word page orientation and margins before resizing the diagram.
• Fonts: Missing fonts are substituted during rendering, changing line breaks and label positions. Install the original fonts or convert the diagram through Visio on a system that has them.
• Connectors and layers: Dynamic connectors, hidden layers, data graphics, hyperlinks, and shape metadata may be flattened, omitted, or lose their Visio behavior.
• Modern Word formats: Visio and current Word versions usually produce .docx first. Saving to legacy .doc can trigger additional layout changes and remove newer Word features.
