What the VDX format is

VDX is the XML-based Visio Drawing format used by Microsoft Visio for flowcharts, network diagrams, organizational charts, mind maps, and other structured drawings. Visio 2003–2010 commonly used VDX for XML-based storage and exchange, while newer Visio versions generally use VSDX.

A VDX file can contain editable shapes, connectors, text, masters, page settings, themes, hyperlinks, and diagram metadata. It is normally encountered as an exported or exchanged Visio drawing rather than as a general-purpose vector graphic. Microsoft Visio is the most reliable application for interpreting its layout and shape relationships.

What the EPS format is

EPS, or Encapsulated PostScript, is a page-description format designed for importing artwork into illustration, desktop-publishing, and prepress applications. It can preserve vector paths and print-oriented text and is useful when a production system specifically requires .eps.

EPS is less suitable for continued diagram editing: Visio-specific shapes, connectors, data fields, hyperlinks, layers, and diagram semantics are usually flattened into drawing geometry. EPS also has limited support for modern transparency, effects, and color-management features compared with PDF or SVG.

How to actually convert VDX to EPS

Using the online converter

1. Open the VDX-to-EPS converter on 101convert.com; the service can be used without installing desktop software.
2. Upload the .vdx file and select EPS as the output format.
3. Start the conversion, then download the generated .eps file.
4. Open the result in an EPS-capable application and check page size, text, connector positions, and any transparent or shaded objects.

Using Microsoft Visio and a desktop converter

1. Open the VDX file in Microsoft Visio and inspect every page for missing fonts, unresolved shapes, or altered connectors.
2. Export the drawing to PDF through File → Export → Create PDF/XPS or File → Save As, selecting PDF.
3. Convert the PDF to EPS with Poppler's pdftops command:

pdftops -eps input.pdf output.eps

For a multipage PDF, convert only the required page or use a page-specific command:

pdftops -f 1 -l 1 -eps input.pdf output-page-1.eps

PDF preserves the exported page geometry more reliably than copying a diagram into another application. If Visio exports several pages, create separate EPS files when the destination workflow expects one illustration per file.

Using LibreOffice as an alternative

LibreOffice Draw can open some VDX files through its Visio import support. Open the file with File → Open, export it as PDF through File → Export as PDF, and run pdftops -eps on the PDF. Import support varies by VDX version, embedded object, custom stencil, and Visio feature, so compare the PDF with the original before producing EPS.

Quality and compatibility limitations

The conversion normally preserves vector outlines, but it does not preserve the VDX document as an editable Visio diagram. Unsupported Visio effects may be simplified, substituted, or rasterized during PDF export. Embedded OLE objects, data graphics, comments, hyperlinks, and custom stencils may disappear.

Install the original fonts before exporting; otherwise Visio or the PDF converter can substitute fonts or convert text to outlines. Verify that the EPS uses the required page dimensions, orientation, and color space. For commercial printing, ask the production provider whether it requires CMYK EPS, embedded fonts, outlined text, or a particular PostScript compatibility level.

Open the EPS in Inkscape, Adobe Illustrator, Ghostscript, or the target publishing application to check for clipped labels, incorrect line weights, missing arrowheads, and unexpected white backgrounds. Keep the original VDX and exported PDF because EPS is a delivery format, not a replacement for the editable source.
