What the VDX format is
VDX is the XML-based Microsoft Visio Drawing format used for flowcharts, organization charts, network diagrams, mind maps, and other structured drawings. It stores pages, shapes, connectors, text, formatting, layers, and shape data in an XML document. Visio 2003-era and later versions use VDX, although newer Visio workflows generally use the VSDX format. VDX files are therefore common in older Visio archives and projects.
What the SVG format is
SVG is an XML-based vector graphics format supported by web browsers, illustration software, publishing applications, and documentation systems. Its lines, curves, text, and shapes remain scalable, so enlarging an SVG does not produce the pixelation associated with bitmap images. SVG is suitable for embedding a flowchart in HTML, editing it in applications such as Inkscape, and placing it in print or presentation materials.
How to convert VDX to SVG
Using Microsoft Visio:
- Open the
.vdxfile in Visio and check every required page for missing fonts, substituted shapes, broken connectors, and incorrect page dimensions. - Open the version-dependent File → Save As or File → Export command.
- Set the file type to SVG or SVG Drawing. If Visio asks which page to export, select the required page.
- Choose a destination and save the output with the
.svgextension. - Open the result in a browser or SVG editor and inspect text, arrowheads, line widths, object positions, and page boundaries.
Visio versions differ in their menu names and SVG support. If the installed version cannot export SVG, open the VDX in a newer desktop Visio release or use the free converter on 101convert.com: upload the VDX file, select SVG as the output format, run the conversion, and download the resulting file.
Do not rename .vdx to .svg. Although both formats use XML, their schemas and drawing models differ, so changing the extension does not convert the file.
Quality and compatibility limits
SVG conversion is primarily visual. Visio-specific shape data, custom properties, comments, macros, hyperlinks, and interactive behavior may be omitted. A standalone SVG normally represents one canvas, so a multi-page VDX may require separate exports or produce one SVG per page, depending on the converter.
Text appearance depends on the fonts available during conversion. If the destination system lacks those fonts, text can reflow or change appearance; converting text to paths improves visual consistency but removes normal text editing and can increase file size. Embedded objects, effects, specialized stencils, complex connectors, and unusual page sizes may also require manual cleanup in an SVG editor. Preserve the original VDX when Visio-specific editability or metadata is needed.
