What the VSDM format is

VSDM is Microsoft Visio’s macro-enabled drawing format. It stores flowcharts, organizational diagrams, network maps, process diagrams, and other structured drawings, together with the XML drawing data and potentially VBA macros. Microsoft Visio creates and opens VSDM files; they commonly appear when a diagram was saved with macro support enabled.

What the SVG format is

SVG is an XML-based vector graphics format supported by web browsers, illustration software, document systems, and many diagram editors. Lines, shapes, text, and connectors remain scalable without pixelation, and the resulting file can usually be inspected or edited as XML. SVG is suitable for embedding a flowchart in a webpage, publishing it in technical documentation, or importing it into applications that do not support Visio files.

How to convert VSDM to SVG

Using Microsoft Visio

1. Open the VSDM file in Microsoft Visio. If the document contains macros, allow them only if the file is trusted; SVG cannot retain executable VBA behavior.
2. Select the page to export. For a multipage drawing, export each page separately if your Visio version does not provide a page-selection option.
3. Choose File → Save As.
4. Set the file type to SVG (*.svg), choose the destination, and select Save. Some Visio versions expose the same option under File → Export.
5. Open the SVG in a browser or vector editor and check text, arrowheads, page boundaries, and connector positions before distribution.

Quality and compatibility limitations

SVG export preserves vector geometry, but Visio-specific features may change. VBA macros, custom document behavior, Visio layers, data-linked metadata, comments, and some effects do not become functional SVG content. Fonts that are unavailable on the viewing system may be substituted, changing text wrapping or alignment; convert text to outlines in a vector editor only when consistent appearance matters more than text searchability and editing.

Raster images embedded in the drawing remain raster images inside the SVG and do not gain vector resolution. Transparent fills, gradients, shadows, patterned lines, and specialized Visio shapes can also render differently between Visio and SVG viewers. Review the exported file at its intended display size, particularly when the diagram contains small labels or dense connectors.
