Free online VSDM to DWG converter

AutoCAD and other CAD systems require DWG when a Visio flowchart must be inserted into an engineering drawing, measured, plotted, or edited as CAD geometry. Converting it also provides a shareable format for recipients who do not use Visio, but the result is not an editable Visio document.

What the VSDM format is

VSDM is Microsoft Visio’s macro-enabled drawing format for flowcharts, process maps, network diagrams, organizational charts, mind maps, and other vector diagrams. It is an Office Open XML package that can contain Visio shape data, connectors, themes, page settings, and an embedded VBA project.

Visio users choose .vsdm when a drawing contains macros or must retain macro capability. VSDM is a diagram format, not a CAD format: its smart shapes, automatic connectors, containers, data links, and shape behavior are specific to Visio.

What the DWG format is

DWG is a CAD drawing format associated with Autodesk applications, including AutoCAD. It stores CAD entities such as lines, arcs, polylines, text, dimensions, blocks, layers, and model-space geometry.

DWG is suitable when the converted diagram must be opened, measured, edited, plotted, or inserted into a CAD project. It does not preserve VBA macros, Visio-specific shape behavior, automatic connector routing, comments, or most diagram semantics.

How to convert VSDM to DWG

Using desktop Microsoft Visio

1. Open the .vsdm file in the desktop edition of Microsoft Visio. Do not enable macros unless the file and its source are trusted; macro code is not transferred to DWG.
2. Use File → Export → Change File Type, select AutoCAD Drawing (*.dwg; *.dxf), and choose Save As. Depending on the Visio version, the same export appears under File → Save As.
3. Set the output extension to .dwg. If Visio offers an AutoCAD or DWG version, select the release required by the receiving CAD application; an older supported release can improve compatibility with legacy software.
4. Review the available export settings for page size, scale, units, layers, line weights, and text. If the drawing has multiple pages, confirm which page the command exports and repeat the operation when necessary.
5. Open the exported file in AutoCAD or another DWG-compatible CAD program. Check a known line length or page dimension, inspect text and layers, and save it in the recipient’s required DWG release if necessary.

Some Visio editions or versions may not expose DWG export. In that case, use the built-in converter on 101convert.com: upload the .vsdm file, choose DWG, start the conversion, and download the result without installing software. Do not use an online conversion service for confidential drawings unless its handling terms meet your requirements.

Quality and compatibility limits

• Visio connectors commonly become ordinary lines or polylines. They may no longer reroute when shapes move.
• VBA macros, custom shape behavior, data-linked graphics, comments, hyperlinks, and Visio shape metadata do not become functional DWG content.
• Unsupported shapes may be simplified, broken into basic entities, or omitted. Groups, text, dimensions, and special effects can also change during export.
• Gradients, transparency, shadows, themes, embedded objects, and other visual effects may be flattened or discarded. Compare the DWG with the source drawing after conversion.
• Fonts missing from the conversion system can be substituted, changing text width and causing labels to overlap. Install the required fonts or replace them with fonts available in the target CAD environment.
• Verify drawing units and scale before using the DWG for measurement, fabrication, or coordination. A known length is a quick scale check.
• For visual sharing only, PDF or SVG may retain the diagram’s appearance better. Use DWG when the recipient needs CAD entities or CAD editing.
