A DWG file is needed when a Visio diagram must be opened, measured, or edited in AutoCAD or another CAD application. Converting it also lets drafting teams insert the diagram into a larger technical drawing instead of working from a static image.
What the VSD format is
.vsd is Microsoft Visio's binary drawing format, used extensively before the XML-based .vsdx format became standard. Visio files can contain flowcharts, organization charts, network diagrams, process maps, floor-plan-style diagrams, schematics, connectors, text, layers, page settings, and shape data.
VSD files are used by businesses, engineers, IT teams, and technical documentation groups. A Visio diagram stores relationships between shapes and connectors, but it is not a CAD model: its geometry, grouping, connector behavior, and shape intelligence are Visio-specific.
What the DWG format is
.dwg is a drawing format associated with AutoCAD and supported by CAD applications such as DraftSight, BricsCAD, and ZWCAD. It can store editable 2D entities including lines, arcs, polylines, text, dimensions, blocks, layers, and line types; some DWG files also contain 3D CAD data.
DWG is suitable when the recipient needs CAD snapping, coordinate-based measurement, layer control, plotting, or insertion into another technical drawing. A VSD conversion normally produces 2D drafting geometry; it does not create 3D solids, parametric constraints, or fully intelligent AutoCAD objects.

Convert with Microsoft Visio desktop
- Open the VSD file in an installed desktop edition of Visio that supports AutoCAD export. Visio for the web and viewer applications do not provide the same export capability.
- Review page size, orientation, drawing scale, units, visible layers, fonts, and the pages to be delivered. Remove or hide guide shapes, background elements, and unwanted content.
- Use File → Save As → Browse or the equivalent export command, then select
AutoCAD Drawing (*.dwg). - Choose the destination and save the file. The command name, available export formats, and options vary by Visio edition and release.
- Open the DWG in the target CAD application and verify a known dimension, units, layer assignments, text placement, line types, and page extents.
If direct DWG export is unavailable, save the Visio drawing as AutoCAD Drawing Exchange (*.dxf) when that option exists. Open the DXF in AutoCAD, DraftSight, BricsCAD, or another compatible CAD program and use Save As to create a DWG. The resulting DWG version should match the recipient application's requirements.
Quality and compatibility limits
- Visio shapes, grouped objects, custom geometry, control handles, hyperlinks, comments, themes, and shape data may be discarded or converted into lines, polylines, blocks, or groups.
- Connector behavior is usually not preserved as Visio relationships. A connector may become ordinary CAD geometry that no longer follows a shape when the shape is moved.
- Text can move, change width, or wrap differently when the destination computer lacks the original fonts. Check rotated labels, multiline text, and text inside shapes.
- Embedded pictures and scanned diagrams remain raster content or may be omitted; they do not become editable CAD vectors. Tracing or redrawing is required for vector geometry.
- Gradients, transparency, shadows, embedded objects, and custom stencil effects may have no equivalent DWG entity.
- Visio page size and print scale do not guarantee the intended CAD model scale. Measure a known source distance in the exported file and correct the geometry or units in CAD if necessary.
- A file that opens successfully is not necessarily a complete conversion. Inspect a representative page, especially before converting a large archive or delivering engineering documentation.
