Convert VSDX to DWG

A CAD application, contractor, or fabrication workflow may require a Visio diagram as an AutoCAD-compatible file. Converting it to DWG makes exportable vector geometry available for editing, measurement, and reuse in many CAD programs.

What the VSDX format is

VSDX is the XML-based drawing format introduced with Microsoft Visio 2013. It is used for flowcharts, organization charts, network diagrams, floor plans, process diagrams, and technical schematics. A VSDX file is an Open Packaging Convention ZIP package containing XML, relationships, images, themes, and shape data; it is the native document format for current Visio desktop and web workflows.

What the DWG format is

DWG is the native drawing format associated with AutoCAD and is supported by many CAD, surveying, architecture, engineering, and manufacturing applications. A DWG can contain editable lines, arcs, polylines, text, dimensions, blocks, layers, and other CAD geometry. It is the appropriate target when the recipient must modify the drawing in AutoCAD or incorporate it into an existing CAD workflow.

Convert with Microsoft Visio desktop

1. Open the file, such as diagram.vsdx, in a supported Visio desktop edition. Visio for the web does not provide the same CAD export commands.
2. Remove or hide content that should not be exported. Check the page size, orientation, measurement units, and drawing scale using Design → Size and Design → Size → Page Setup, where those commands are available.
3. Choose File → Save As, select AutoCAD Drawing (*.dwg) as the file type, and save the result as diagram.dwg. Some Visio versions expose the command through File → Export → Change File Type.
4. If Visio displays export settings, select the required DWG version and review the available options for scale, units, layers, line weights, and text. The exact options vary by Visio version.
5. Open the DWG in AutoCAD, BricsCAD, DraftSight, or another CAD editor. Autodesk DWG TrueView can inspect, plot, and convert DWG files, but it is not a full CAD editor.

Visio’s DWG support and export options depend on the desktop version and edition. If AutoCAD Drawing (*.dwg) is absent, update or use a Visio desktop edition that supports CAD export; AutoCAD does not natively open VSDX files.

Convert with an online service

CloudConvert and Zamzar list VSDX and DWG among their supported formats, but input and output availability can change. Confirm that the service currently offers VSDX → DWG, then upload diagram.vsdx, choose DWG, run the conversion, and inspect the downloaded file in a CAD editor or viewer.

Online conversion sends the drawing to a third-party server. Do not upload confidential floor plans, network diagrams, personal data, or proprietary engineering drawings unless the provider’s retention, deletion, and security terms are acceptable. A desktop Visio export is preferable for sensitive files.

Quality and compatibility limits

Visio shapes are not native CAD objects. Export can convert them into lines, arcs, polylines, blocks, grouped geometry, or raster images, and can discard connectors, smart behavior, shape data, themes, transparency, embedded objects, comments, hyperlinks, and some text effects. A Visio symbol or dimension may therefore look correct while lacking the corresponding CAD intelligence.

Text can change because of missing fonts, unsupported effects, substitutions, or different text metrics. Check font availability, line types, line weights, hatches, dimensions, and block behavior after export.

Page size and drawing scale can produce incorrect real-world measurements. In the target CAD program, verify a known distance with DIST and inspect or correct drawing units with UNITS. Check every Visio page: depending on the Visio version and export method, pages may require separate DWG files rather than appearing as layouts or sheets in one file.

For production drawings, treat the exported DWG as a starting point. Recreate critical dimensions, symbols, layers, constraints, and fabrication details in the CAD application, and save to the DWG version required by the recipient.
