AutoCAD-based CAD systems cannot natively edit a Visio diagram as a VSDX file, so a DWG copy is needed for CAD measurement, layer-based editing, plotting, or delivery to an engineering team. The conversion changes Visio diagram objects into CAD geometry and should be checked before production use.

What the VSDX format is

VSDX is Microsoft Visio's XML-based drawing format, introduced with Visio 2013. It is used for flowcharts, mind maps, organization charts, process maps, network diagrams, floor-plan-style layouts, and technical schematics.

A VSDX file is a compressed Open Packaging Convention package containing XML, relationships, page definitions, themes, images, connectors, text, hyperlinks, and shape data. Visio desktop and Visio for the web use it as a native document format. Its shapes can contain behavior and metadata that have no equivalent in a CAD file.

What the DWG format is

DWG is a CAD drawing format associated with AutoCAD and supported by many architecture, engineering, surveying, manufacturing, and drafting applications. It can store 2D and 3D geometry, layers, blocks, polylines, arcs, text, dimensions, hatches, layouts, and drawing metadata.

DWG is the appropriate target when the recipient needs AutoCAD-compatible editing, precise coordinates, CAD measurement, layer control, or plotting. A converted Visio diagram normally becomes 2D lines, arcs, polylines, text, and blocks; it does not remain a collection of intelligent Visio shapes.

Convert with Microsoft Visio desktop

1. Open the .vsdx file in Microsoft Visio desktop. Visio for the web does not provide the same desktop CAD export controls.
2. Check the page size, orientation, measurement units, scale, text, and connector placement. Remove or hide content that should not be included in the CAD file.
3. Choose File → Save As → Browse, or use the equivalent export or file-type command in your Visio version.
4. Set the file type to AutoCAD Drawing (*.dwg), enter a destination and filename such as diagram.dwg, and choose Save.
5. If Visio displays export options, select the DWG release required by the recipient and review units, scale, layers, line weights, and text settings. Available options vary by Visio edition and version.
6. Open the result in AutoCAD, BricsCAD, DraftSight, or another DWG editor and verify dimensions, scale, page extents, layers, text, line types, and blocks.

If AutoCAD Drawing (*.dwg) is unavailable, the installed Visio edition may not support that export or may require an update. Visio may also offer AutoCAD Interchange (*.dxf); DXF is a different format and is only a substitute when the receiving CAD application accepts it. AutoCAD itself does not natively open VSDX files.

• Visio behavior is lost: connectors, smart shapes, shape data, hyperlinks, comments, themes, transparency, embedded objects, and other diagram properties may be discarded or converted into ordinary geometry.
• Geometry can be fragmented: a shape or connector may become separate lines, polylines, grouped objects, blocks, or—in some cases—an image rather than editable CAD entities.
• Text can change: missing fonts, unsupported effects, different font metrics, and conversion of text to outlines can alter position or appearance. Check fonts, text direction, and line spacing.
• Scale requires verification: inconsistent page and drawing units can produce errors such as a 25.4-to-1 metric/imperial mismatch. Measure a known distance in the CAD program and inspect or correct units with its drawing-unit settings, such as AutoCAD's UNITS command.
• Pages need checking: Visio documents can contain multiple pages, while CAD applications use model space and layouts differently. Confirm which pages were exported and whether each required page needs its own DWG.
• CAD intelligence may need rebuilding: recreate critical dimensions, layers, constraints, symbols, hatches, and fabrication details in the CAD application instead of assuming the exported geometry is production-ready.
