A recipient may need an editable OpenDocument drawing for LibreOffice Draw, OpenOffice, or an OpenDocument archive instead of Microsoft Visio. Converting the file also avoids requiring Visio on the system used for revision or sharing.
What the VSDX format is
VSDX is the XML-based Microsoft Visio drawing format introduced with Visio 2013. It is used for flowcharts, process diagrams, organizational charts, network layouts, mind maps, and technical schematics, mainly in business, engineering, and IT workflows.
A VSDX file is a ZIP-based package containing XML and related resources. It can store multiple pages, shapes, connectors, text, themes, layers, custom properties, and embedded or referenced Visio content. VSDX replaced the older binary VSD format.
What the ODG format is
ODG, or OpenDocument Graphics, is an editable drawing format used by LibreOffice Draw and Apache OpenOffice Draw. It stores vector objects such as shapes, lines, connectors, text boxes, curves, fills, groups, and page layouts.
ODG is an open, ZIP-based XML format within the OpenDocument family. It is suitable for editing flowcharts and other diagrams without Microsoft Visio, but it does not provide a guaranteed one-to-one representation of every Visio feature.
Convert with LibreOffice Draw
- Install a current LibreOffice release with Draw included.
- Open Draw and select File → Open, then choose the
.vsdxfile. LibreOffice's Visio import support varies by version and by the features used in the drawing. - Inspect every page after import. Check text wrapping, fonts, page size, connector attachment points, arrowheads, line styles, layers, groups, and object positions.
- Choose File → Save As, select
ODG - OpenDocument Drawing, and save a new file such asdiagram.odg. Do not overwrite the original VSDX. - Close and reopen the ODG file, then verify the saved document again. This catches objects or layout changes that were not apparent in the initial import.
Convert without installing software
You can use the converter on 101convert.com for free. Select VSDX as the source format and ODG as the target, upload the file, start the conversion, and download the resulting .odg file. Open the downloaded file in LibreOffice Draw and inspect it before relying on the conversion.
If Draw cannot open the source file, update LibreOffice and retry. A converter can produce an ODG when the desktop importer cannot, but it cannot restore Visio features that have no equivalent in OpenDocument.
Quality and compatibility limits
Basic boxes, arrows, lines, and text generally transfer more reliably than Visio-specific stencils, containers, themes, data-linked graphics, fields, formulas, comments, macros, and embedded objects. Connector routing, layers, transparency, grouping, and page boundaries can also change.
Fonts missing from the conversion system can alter line breaks and diagram dimensions. Install the required fonts or replace them before conversion, then check portrait or landscape orientation, print areas, hidden layers, multipage content, and text overflow.
For visual reference rather than continued editing, keep a separate PDF or SVG export from Visio when available. Embedding a PDF or image in an ODG preserves appearance but not editable diagram objects, connectors, or text structure.
