What the VSDM format is

.vsdm is the Visio Macro-Enabled Drawing format created by Microsoft Visio. It stores flowcharts, organization charts, network diagrams, process maps, and other vector drawings, along with VBA macro data that can automate Visio tasks.

You typically encounter VSDM files when a diagram was saved from Microsoft Visio with macros enabled. The format is based on Visio’s XML drawing structure, but its shapes, connectors, containers, data fields, themes, and automation features are specific to Visio.

What the ODG format is

.odg is the OpenDocument Graphics format used by LibreOffice Draw, Apache OpenOffice Draw, and other OpenDocument-compatible applications. It stores editable vector objects such as lines, curves, text boxes, arrows, images, and flowchart shapes.

ODG is suitable when a diagram must be edited without Microsoft Visio, stored in an open document format, or included in an OpenDocument office workflow. It does not provide a direct equivalent for Visio VBA macros, proprietary shape behavior, or every Visio metadata feature.

How to convert VSDM to ODG

Using the online converter

1. Open the VSDM-to-ODG converter on 101convert.com; no software installation is required.
2. Select the .vsdm file from your computer.
3. Choose ODG as the output format and start the conversion.
4. Download the generated .odg file and open it in LibreOffice Draw or Apache OpenOffice Draw.

Using Microsoft Visio and LibreOffice Draw

1. Open the VSDM file in Microsoft Visio and allow macros only if the file is trusted; macros are not needed for exporting the diagram.
2. Use File → Export or File → Save As to create an .svg file. SVG retains vector geometry and is usually a better intermediate format than a bitmap image.
3. Open the SVG in LibreOffice Draw.
4. Check text, connectors, arrowheads, layers, and page size, then use File → Save As and select ODF Drawing (.odg).
5. Reopen the saved ODG file to verify that objects remain editable and that no elements moved during import.

Quality and compatibility limits

Conversion normally transfers visible diagram content, but VBA macros are not converted into ODG automation. Visio-only data-linked graphics, custom stencils, themes, containers, 3D effects, unsupported fonts, and specialized connectors may be flattened, substituted, or repositioned.

SVG-based conversion can change text into separate objects or alter line routing because SVG does not preserve Visio’s connector logic. Install the original fonts before exporting, and compare the ODG with the VSDM at high zoom, especially around crossings, arrowheads, labels, and grouped shapes.

If the output is intended only for viewing, exporting to PDF usually preserves appearance more reliably than ODG; use ODG when continued vector editing in an OpenDocument application is required.
