A DOCX copy is useful when a Visio flowchart must be included in a report, edited with Microsoft Word, or shared with people who do not have Visio. Conversion usually transfers the diagram as a rendered object or image because Word does not natively open Visio drawing files.

What the VSDM format is

.vsdm is the Microsoft Visio macro-enabled drawing format. It stores Visio diagrams such as flowcharts, process maps, organizational charts, network diagrams, and other structured visual documents, together with VBA macros when the source file contains them.

Microsoft Visio creates VSDM files when a drawing needs macro support. You may encounter one when a diagram comes from a business-process, engineering, or documentation workflow built in Visio. The format is related to .vsdx, but VSDX does not support embedded VBA macros.

What the DOCX format is

.docx is the XML-based Microsoft Word document format. It is intended for editable text documents containing paragraphs, tables, images, captions, headers, and embedded objects.

DOCX is suitable for placing a flowchart in a report, adding explanatory text around it, applying Word styles, and distributing the result to users who have Word or another DOCX-compatible editor. It does not preserve Visio-specific layers, connectors, shape data, formulas, or VBA macros as native Word content.

How to actually convert VSDM to DOCX

Use the built-in converter on 101convert.com

  1. Open the VSDM to DOCX converter on 101convert.com.
  2. Select the source file, such as process-map.vsdm.
  3. Choose DOCX as the output format and start the conversion.
  4. Download the generated Word document and open it in Microsoft Word or another DOCX editor.

This option requires no installed software and is suitable when the goal is a shareable Word document rather than preservation of an editable Visio model.

Copy the diagram from Microsoft Visio into Word

  1. Open process-map.vsdm in Microsoft Visio.
  2. Check the page size, orientation, hidden layers, and print area in Visio before copying.
  3. Select the diagram or the required shapes, then use Home → Copy.
  4. Open Word, create a document, and use Home → Paste Special.
  5. Choose a Visio object when continued Visio editing is required, or choose an image format when stable appearance is more important.
  6. Save the document with File → Save As and select Word Document (*.docx).

For supported process diagrams, Visio may also provide a Word export command under Process → Export. If that command is unavailable, copying the diagram or exporting it as PDF, SVG, or PNG and inserting the result into Word is the practical desktop fallback.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

A converted DOCX normally contains a visual representation of the Visio page, not independently editable Word shapes. Text may therefore be difficult to revise, connectors may no longer adapt when shapes move, and multiple-page drawings may become separate images or pages.

Large diagrams can become unreadable when scaled to a portrait Word page. Set the Word section to landscape, use a larger paper size, or insert separate page-level diagrams. SVG generally preserves sharper lines than raster images, but support varies among Word versions and other DOCX editors.

VBA macros are not carried into DOCX: the macro code, Visio events, custom shape behavior, and Visio data graphics remain available only in the original VSDM file. Keep that source file as the authoritative editable version and use the DOCX for document distribution.
