What the MINDNODE format is

.mindnode is MindNode’s native document format for mind maps and flowcharts. It stores the map’s central topic, branches, notes, relationships, formatting, and other document data in a structure intended for MindNode rather than general-purpose document editors.

MindNode for macOS, iPhone, and iPad creates and opens MINDNODE files. You typically encounter one when receiving an editable mind map, moving a project between Apple devices, or archiving a map made in MindNode.

What the DOCX format is

.docx is the Office Open XML word-processing format used by Microsoft Word, LibreOffice Writer, Apple Pages, and many document-management systems. It supports editable paragraphs, headings, lists, tables, images, styles, comments, and page layout.

DOCX is suitable when the map’s content must become a report, meeting plan, study outline, requirements document, or other file that can be revised and printed as pages. It is not a native mind-map format, so it cannot preserve every spatial relationship or canvas feature from MindNode.

RTF generally retains more basic text structure than plain text. Markdown and plain text can preserve the branch order but require more formatting in the word processor. PDF export is intended for fixed visual output and is not a good intermediate format when the DOCX must remain editable.

Quality and compatibility limitations

The converter normally has to linearize the map. Parent and child topics may become headings, paragraphs, or indented lists, while branches arranged beside one another on the MindNode canvas become sequential content in the DOCX.

MindNode themes, free-positioned branches, curved connections, boundaries, relationship arrows, folding state, and canvas spacing may be simplified or omitted. Notes and images may transfer depending on the converter and the source file; inspect the DOCX before submitting or distributing it.

For a faithful visual copy, export a PDF or image from MindNode separately and include it alongside the DOCX. For an editable document, review heading levels, list indentation, page breaks, images, and special characters after conversion.
