What the MINDNODE format is

.mindnode is the native document format used by MindNode for mind maps, outlines, notes, relationships, themes, and other map data. MindNode creates and opens these files on Apple platforms, and newer files may contain document data that is not directly readable as a simple text file. The format preserves the map’s visual and structural features inside MindNode, but other outline applications generally cannot open it directly.

What the OPML format is

OPML (Outline Processor Markup Language) is an XML-based outline format. It represents information as nested <outline> elements, so it is suitable for transferring a mind map’s parent-and-child topic hierarchy to outliners, note-taking applications, feed readers, and other compatible software.

OPML preserves topic text and hierarchy well, but it is not a full visual mind-map format. Canvas positions, connector styling, themes, images, free-floating nodes, and some MindNode-specific metadata may be omitted or represented differently.

How to actually convert MINDNODE to OPML

Using MindNode

1. Open the .mindnode document in MindNode.
2. Check the hierarchy and expand or collapse branches as needed. Export normally uses the complete outline, not merely the branches visible on screen.
3. Choose File → Export To → OPML on macOS, or use MindNode’s share/export command on iPhone or iPad if OPML is offered in that version.
4. Choose a destination and save the resulting .opml file.
5. Open the file in the target application and verify that the root topic, indentation, and child order transferred correctly.

Menu names differ between MindNode releases; if OPML is not listed, use the application’s export or share dialog and look for an outline-format option. Updating MindNode may add or restore supported export formats.

Quality and compatibility limitations

The conversion is primarily a hierarchy conversion: the main topic becomes the OPML root, branches become nested outline elements, and sibling order is normally retained. Review maps containing cross-links, summaries, callouts, images, attachments, or multiple disconnected branches because OPML has no universal representation for those MindNode features.

OPML files are XML documents, so applications can differ in how they interpret attributes, notes, HTML inside outline text, and multiple root-level items. If the receiving program rejects the file, open it in a plain-text editor and check that it begins with an XML declaration or <opml> element and that the document is well formed; do not edit it with a word processor.
