What the MINDNODE format is

.mindnode is the native document format used by MindNode for mind maps, including topics, relationships, notes, links, images, tasks, and visual styling. MindNode creates these files on macOS and iOS; depending on the version, a document can be a package containing structured map data and resources rather than a simple text file. Renaming .mindnode to .mmap does not convert it.

What the MMAP format is

.mmap is the native map format associated with MindManager. It stores an editable map with branches, topics, boundaries, relationships, notes, hyperlinks, attachments, and MindManager-specific formatting. It is appropriate when the recipient must continue editing the map in MindManager, but some MindNode-only styling or objects may not have an equivalent in the target format.

How to convert MINDNODE to MMAP

Using MindNode and MindManager through OPML

For a local workflow, use OPML as an interchange format. OPML normally preserves the map hierarchy and topic text but is less suitable for visual layout and application-specific objects.

1. Open the map in MindNode.
2. Choose File → Export and select OPML, if that export is available in your MindNode version.
3. Save the resulting .opml file.
4. In MindManager, choose File → Open or File → Import, select the OPML file, and let MindManager create the map.
5. Review the imported structure, then choose File → Save As and save it as .mmap.

Quality and compatibility limits

OPML-based conversion is primarily structural: branch order and text usually transfer, while canvas positioning, themes, summaries, boundaries, relationship lines, task metadata, images, attachments, and notes may be omitted or changed. MindNode features without a MindManager equivalent cannot be preserved exactly. Keep the original .mindnode file as the editable source, and verify the converted map in the exact MindManager version used by the recipient.
