What the XMMAP format is

XMMAP is an XML-based mind-map format associated with XMind and XMind-compatible mind-mapping software. It stores a map as a hierarchy of central topics, branches, subtopics, and topic text. You may encounter it when opening older XMind map files, exporting a map from compatible software, or receiving a mind map from someone using that software.

The format is designed for visual maps rather than general-purpose outline exchange. Its file can contain presentation details such as colors, icons, notes, relationships, and other map-specific properties in addition to the topic hierarchy.

What the OPML format is

OPML, or Outline Processor Markup Language, is an XML format for nested outlines. It is widely supported by outliners, feed readers, note-taking applications, and other software that works with hierarchical data.

OPML is useful when the important content is the map's structure: a root topic with nested branches. It is readable as XML, easy to archive, and generally more portable between applications than a proprietary mind-map format. The same structure can also be used for RSS subscription lists, although a converted mind map normally contains outline nodes rather than feed URLs.

How to convert XMMAP to OPML

The built-in converter at 101convert.com can convert the file without installing desktop software:

1. Open the XMMAP to OPML conversion page on 101convert.com.
2. Upload the .xmmap file from your computer.
3. Confirm OPML as the output format and start the conversion.
4. Download the generated .opml file.
5. Open the result in an OPML-compatible outliner or feed reader and check several nested branches before deleting the original map.

If your mind-mapping application offers an export command, use its native OPML option first: File → Export → OPML. If OPML is unavailable, export the map as XMMAP and use the converter. A desktop outliner such as Freeplane may also import compatible XMind maps and export an outline as OPML, but support for the XMMAP variant depends on the application version.

Quality and compatibility limits

The conversion normally retains topic names and parent-child relationships. Map-specific styling, images, icons, boundaries, summaries, hyperlinks, notes, floating topics, cross-links, and layout coordinates may be omitted or simplified because OPML has no standard representation for those visual features.

OPML versions differ slightly between applications. If the destination rejects the file, open it in a text or XML editor and verify that it has one <opml> root element, a <body> element, and nested <outline> elements with escaped special characters. Do not rename .xmmap to .opml; changing the extension does not convert the internal XML structure.
