What the XMMAP format is

XMMAP is associated with XMind mind-map files. It stores a map's hierarchy, node labels, relationships, notes, hyperlinks, and some presentation settings in a structured document rather than as ordinary readable text.

XMind is the main program associated with creating and opening XMMAP files. You may encounter them as exported or saved mind maps received from another user, in older project folders, or in archives where the original XMind installation is no longer available. The exact features preserved depend on the XMind version that created the file.

What the TXT format is

TXT is a plain-text format containing characters without map layout, colors, icons, images, or interactive links. It works with Notepad, TextEdit, code editors, command-line tools, document systems, and almost every operating system.

A TXT conversion is useful when you need the map's topics as a simple indented outline, want to search or edit node names, need to import content into another text-based workflow, or want a small long-term archive. It does not preserve the visual arrangement of branches.

How to convert XMMAP to TXT

Using the built-in online converter

Using XMind desktop

1. Install a XMind version that supports the file, then open the XMMAP through File → Open.
2. Check the map for missing branches, notes, or unsupported objects.

Menu names differ between XMind releases. If the installed release cannot export TXT directly, export the map as an outline-supported format such as Markdown or OPML, then convert that intermediate file to plain text while checking the hierarchy manually.

Quality and compatibility limits

TXT conversion normally retains topic names and nesting levels, but it can discard branch styling, boundaries, summaries, images, attachments, icons, task metadata, hyperlinks, and notes. A large map may become a long indented list rather than a visually equivalent diagram.

After conversion, verify non-ASCII characters such as accented letters, CJK text, and emoji. UTF-8 is the safest encoding; legacy applications may misread the file if they assume Windows-1252 or another local encoding.
