4. If the UML file contains only diagram data and not readable text, export the diagram as text or documentation from the modeling tool first, then save that output as TXT.

Notes on quality and limitations

UML to TXT is usually a one-way simplification. If the source file is a visual diagram or a proprietary project file, converting to TXT will not preserve shapes, connectors, colors, layout, or diagram semantics in a visual form. You will typically get either raw source text or a textual export of the model.

If the UML file is binary or application-specific, a plain text editor may show unreadable characters. In that case, use the original UML software to export a text-based representation. Also note that TXT cannot store formatting, so any structured documentation will become plain, unformatted text.

For best results, use TXT conversion only when you need a readable text version of the UML content, not when you need to keep the diagram itself.
