What the XMAP format is
In the mind-map and flowchart context, XMAP is an XML-based map format used to store topics, branches, relationships, and sometimes notes or formatting information. Files with this extension are associated with mind-mapping software, including applications that use XMAP as an interchange or project format.
An XMAP file can preserve the hierarchy and structure of a map, but its XML markup is not convenient for ordinary reading. The exact elements retained depend on the program that created the file, so open it first with that application or inspect its XML structure before converting it.
What the TXT format is
TXT is a plain-text format containing characters without map-specific layout, fonts, colors, icons, or branch graphics. It works with Notepad, text editors, command-line tools, document processors, scripts, and version-control systems.
For a mind map, TXT normally represents the data as an indented outline: top-level topics appear at the left, and child topics receive spaces, tabs, or another indentation marker. This makes the result suitable for searching and editing, but it cannot preserve the visual map or every relationship between branches.
How to actually convert XMAP to TXT
Using the original mind-mapping software
- Make a backup of the original
.xmapfile. - Open the file in the application associated with XMAP, or try XMind if the file came from an XMind-based workflow.
- Use File → Export and select TXT, Text, or an outline export format if the option is available.
- Choose whether to export the complete map or only the selected branch, then set the indentation or tab option if offered.
- Save the result and open it in a plain-text editor to verify that topic order and nesting are correct.
Some programs provide an outline export rather than a direct TXT option. Export to that outline format first, then open it in a text editor and save it as map.txt using UTF-8 encoding.
Using the built-in online converter
You can convert the file on 101convert.com for free without installing software. Upload the XMAP file, select TXT as the output format, start the conversion, and download the generated file. Do not use this method for maps containing confidential, personal, or commercially sensitive information.
Quality and compatibility limits
TXT conversion is usually lossy: colors, images, icons, hyperlinks, boundaries, summaries, cross-links, notes, and layout coordinates may be discarded. A map with cross-links may become an incomplete linear outline because TXT has no standard way to represent non-hierarchical relationships.
If the converted file shows XML tags instead of an outline, the converter has exported the source structure rather than interpreting the map. In that case, use the creating application’s export function or a converter that explicitly supports XMAP map semantics. Check non-ASCII characters after conversion and select UTF-8 when saving to prevent corruption of accented letters and non-Latin scripts.
