ITMZ files are used by iThoughts mind-mapping software, while many editors and scripts accept only plain TXT. Converting the map produces a portable outline that can be searched, edited, shared, or archived without the original application.

What the ITMZ format is

ITMZ is the native mind-map format used by iThoughts, including iThoughtsX and related versions for Apple devices and computers. It stores a map's topics, branches, relationships, notes, formatting, and other map structure in a compressed package. You typically encounter it when someone sends an iThoughts map or when a map is exported from that software.

Changing the filename extension to .txt does not convert the file. Extracting the ITMZ package manually may reveal internal data, but that data is not normally arranged as a usable plain-text outline.

What the TXT format is

TXT is unformatted plain text. It works with basic editors, command-line tools, search utilities, document-management systems, and almost every operating system. A TXT export can retain topic names and often represents child topics with indentation, but it cannot preserve map graphics, colors, icons, images, branch styling, or spatial layout.

How to convert ITMZ to TXT

Quality and compatibility

The conversion is inherently lossy: TXT represents the map's readable hierarchy, not its visual diagram. Review maps containing floating topics, cross-links, notes, or attachments because these elements may be omitted, flattened, or placed separately in the output.

Use UTF-8 when an encoding option is available so accented characters and non-Latin topic names remain readable. Keep the original ITMZ file if you may need to edit the map later; a TXT file normally cannot be imported with the original layout and formatting restored.
