What the ITMZ format is
ITMZ is the native mind-map document format associated with iThoughts and iThoughtsX. It stores the map structure, including topics, branches, labels, notes, links, icons, and formatting, so the document remains editable in the application that created it.
You usually encounter ITMZ files when someone sends an iThoughts mind map, when a map is transferred between iThoughts installations, or when an iThoughts project is saved for later editing. An ITMZ file is not an ordinary bitmap and cannot be reliably converted by changing its extension.
What the WEBP format is
WEBP is an image format intended for web delivery. It supports lossy and lossless compression, transparency, and standard raster dimensions, making it suitable for publishing a rendered mind map on a website or reducing the size of a shared preview.
WEBP preserves the map’s visual appearance but not its editable branches, notes, hyperlinks, or application-specific metadata. Use PNG or SVG instead when you need lossless text rendering or scalable output for a very large diagram; use WEBP when browser delivery and file size are the priorities.
How to actually convert ITMZ to WEBP
Using iThoughts and the built-in converter
- Open the
.itmzfile in iThoughts or iThoughtsX. If the file does not open, install the version of iThoughts that matches the file’s platform or ask the sender to export it. - Check the map at its intended viewing size. Expand collapsed branches and choose the required page orientation before exporting, because a WEBP file contains only the visible rendered result.
- Use the application’s export or share command, typically File → Export or Share → Export, and create a PNG or SVG image. Select the complete map rather than only the current branch if that option is available.
- Convert the exported image to WEBP with the free converter on 101convert.com. Upload the PNG or SVG, select WEBP as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting
.webpfile.
Using ImageMagick after export
For local batch processing, export the ITMZ map to map.png in iThoughts, install ImageMagick, and run:
magick map.png -quality 90 map.webp
For lossless WEBP output, use:
magick map.png -define webp:lossless=true map.webp
If iThoughts exports SVG, ImageMagick can render it directly, although the result depends on installed fonts and SVG features:
magick -background white map.svg -quality 90 map.webp
Quality and compatibility limits
Mind maps contain small text and long connecting lines, so aggressive lossy compression can create ringing around letters and make branch labels difficult to read. Start with -quality 90 or higher, and use lossless WEBP when exact text and line rendering matter more than file size.
Export at the final display resolution or a larger pixel size; enlarging a low-resolution WEBP will not restore detail. A transparent background may be preserved when the source export and conversion tool support alpha, but a white background is safer for consistent display across document and web software.
WEBP is a flattened image format. Keep the original .itmz file if recipients may need to edit the map, and use an SVG export instead when the diagram must remain sharp at arbitrary zoom levels.
