Free online ITMZ to ODT converter

ITMZ files are mind maps created by iThoughts, while ODT is an editable document format supported by LibreOffice and other office suites. Conversion is useful when a mind map must be delivered as a structured outline, edited as normal text, or archived with office documents.

What the ITMZ format is

ITMZ is the native, compressed mind-map format used by iThoughts and iThoughtsX from Toket, including versions for Windows, macOS, iPad, and iPhone. It stores the map hierarchy, topic text, relationships, notes, hyperlinks, icons, task data, and often attached images or other resources.

You normally encounter an ITMZ file when someone shares an iThoughts map or when a map is saved from the application. ITMZ is designed for editing the map structure in iThoughts; general-purpose word processors do not open it as a document.

What the ODT format is

ODT is the OpenDocument Text format used by LibreOffice Writer, Apache OpenOffice, Collabora Office, and other compatible applications. It is suitable for editable reports, outlines, meeting notes, and long-term document exchange because it is an open, XML-based office format.

ODT cannot represent a mind map as an interactive canvas. A conversion therefore normally changes the map into a linear document: main topics become headings or higher-level list items, and child topics become nested paragraphs or bullets.

How to convert ITMZ to ODT

Using iThoughts and LibreOffice

1. Open the .itmz file in iThoughts or iThoughtsX.
2. Check the map hierarchy and remove branches that should not appear in the document.
3. Use File → Export and choose DOCX or RTF. Select an outline or document-style export if the application offers layout options.
4. Open the exported .docx or .rtf file in LibreOffice Writer.
5. Check heading levels, bullets, notes, hyperlinks, and images, then choose File → Save As and select ODF Text Document (.odt).
6. Reopen the saved .odt file in LibreOffice to verify that the hierarchy and page layout were retained.

Quality and compatibility limits

The conversion is not a one-to-one format change.
