ITMZ files contain editable iThoughts mind maps, while JPEG is easier to open, share, embed, and print in general-purpose software. Convert the map when the recipient does not have iThoughts or when an image snapshot is sufficient instead of an editable map.

What the ITMZ format is

ITMZ is the native mind-map document format used by Toketaware iThoughts. It stores the map hierarchy, topics, relationships, styling, notes, and other map data in a package designed for continued editing rather than ordinary image viewing.

You usually encounter ITMZ files after creating or exporting a map in iThoughts for Windows, macOS, iOS, or other supported platforms. A JPEG viewer cannot interpret the map structure directly, so conversion must render the document as an image.

What the JPEG format is

JPEG is a compressed raster-image format supported by web browsers, office applications, image editors, printers, and most operating systems. It is suitable for sharing a finished map as a single picture and usually produces much smaller files than uncompressed bitmap formats.

JPEG uses lossy compression, so small labels, thin connector lines, and fine text can become less clear at low quality. It does not retain editable topics, links, notes, map relationships, or the original iThoughts layout data.

How to convert ITMZ to JPEG

Using the built-in converter

1. Open the ITMZ file in the conversion tool on 101convert.com.
2. Choose JPEG as the output format.
3. Start the conversion and download the resulting image when processing finishes.

The output is a rendered image of the map; it is not an editable iThoughts file.

Using iThoughts and an image converter

1. Open the file in iThoughts.
2. Use the application’s export command, commonly File → Export or Share → Export, and choose JPEG if the installed version offers it.
3. If JPEG is unavailable, export a PNG at the highest available resolution.
4. Convert the PNG with ImageMagick:

magick input.png -background white -alpha remove -alpha off -quality 92 output.jpg

Replace input.png and output.jpg with the actual filenames. The white background prevents transparent map areas from becoming unexpectedly black in JPEG.

Quality and compatibility considerations

Export at a large pixel size or high resolution before converting, especially for maps with many branches. A single JPEG may make distant labels unreadable even when the original ITMZ file displays them clearly; use PNG or PDF instead when sharp text or printing at large sizes matters.

Keep the original ITMZ file if future editing is possible. JPEG conversion flattens the entire map into one layer and cannot preserve collapsed branches, hyperlinks, attachments, notes, or topic-level formatting as editable data.
